Captain Jack Tippett
Guard Commander;
Potter Transferred
The second change of command
since organization for Zebulon’s
National Guard unit was made
Friday, May 17, when Capt. Jack
M. Tippett replaced Capt. Jack
Potter as commanding officer of
Battery A, 5th Missile Battalion,
113th Artillery. The change in
commanders came when Capt.
Potter was transferred to 5th Mis
sile Battalion headquarters in
Louisburg to be Operations &
Training Officer.
For Capt. Potter, the change
ended a long association with the
local Guard battery. He was a
charter member of the unit, having
been one of the first to enlist when
Battery A was organized by Barrie
Davis in 1949.
Capt. Tippett is returning to the
unit he first joined in 1949. For
several years he has been a mem
ber of the battalion staff in Louis
burg.
Capt. Potter’s military service
began nearly 18 years ago when
he enlisted as a private in the
Army June 21, 1945. Released
from active duty April 1, 1947, he
remained in the Army Reserve un
til June 22, 1949, when he joined
the Army National Guard with
Battery A in Zebulon as a private.
At that time regulations per
mitted Guardsmen to be Advanced
ROTC students, and Potter was
promoted to Sergeant with Battery
A while he also participated in the
Advanced ROTC program at N.
C. State College.
Designated a Distinguished Mil
itary Student, Potter was offered a
Regular Air Force commission,
but refused it to accept a commis
sion as Second Lieutenant, Artil
lery, in the Army National Guard
June 9, 1950.
He served Battery A as platoon
leader and executive officer, and
was promoted to First Lieutenant
in June 1952.
When Capt. Barrie Davis was
transferred to 30th Division Head
quarters in Aplril 1955, Potter
succeeded him as commanding of
ficer of Battery A.
Under Capt. Potter’s leadership,
