S, department of agriculture. Hog cholera control work was in augurated in six counties in the northeastern section of North Caro lina Aug. 1, 1916. An intensive cam paign was carried on for a period of 14 months. It included investigation of reported outbreaks, demonstra tions in the use of serum and virus, and the disinfection of premises. As the services of practicing veterina rians were not available a number of laymen were trained in the adminis tration of the serum treatment for cholera. After that period of inten sive activities the work was with drawn to another section of the State, only general sueprvision be;ng given to the original area. During October a survey was made of the counties comorisiRg the district in question, and a questionnaire was uom.tted to as many of the farmers as could be reached. Answers re ceived and tabulated indicate that there has been a reduction in losses from cholera of over 72 per cent, and an increase of over lt'0 per cent in swine production, due to the pro tection offered by the immunization of the animals. There has also been a marked improvement in the type of this class of animals, due to the 1 nowledge that it is possible to raise more and better hogs without danger of having them destroyed by cholera.
