LENOIR NEWS-TOPIC, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1919 Page Seven NEW LABOR PARTY WOULD ABOLISH THE SENATE Work of organizing the new labor party was completed ' last week in Chicago with the adoption of a lengthy declaration of principles and the election of a national committee which will consist of one man and one woman from each State. Head quarters for the party will be estab lished in Chicago. The organization will call a national convention next summer to nominate candidates for President and Vice-President. In the meantime the leaders of the movement will organize in the dif ferent States. A monthly tax of 2 cents per capita will be levied on the membership to finance the party. A report by the committee on res olutions declared that it deemed it best to make no direct declaration on prohibition, but to ask Congress to submit it to a referendum of the people. A number of wet delegates withdrw from the session because they interpreted this action as a vic tory for the drys. The convention approved the Plumb plan for government owner ship of railroads and the co-operatvie movement to reduce the high cost of living. Resolutions calling for the estab lishment of a soviet government in the United States and advocating the abolishment of the United States Su preme Court were voted down. Other resolutions adapted were: For the creation of a national de partment of health to establish hos pitals and medical and dental dispen saries in every county and city for the free treatment of the sick; a demand that the United States gov ernemnt recognize the Irish repub lic; opposition to declaration of war against Mexico; demand that negroes be give- ,!' : industrial and eco nom; .'. i i .i!..; condmnaton of mob vi'-' i i ccii- when participated in i ai.izations and individuals pro ; 'r. to be inspired by motives of pjiriotism; the constitution was amended to prevent any member from running for office on any other ticket or accepting the endorsement of another party. Included in the declaration of principles are the following: Aboli tion of the United States Senate; election of Federal judges by popu lar vote for term not exceeding four years; international solidarity of la bor; maximum hours of labor for men and women to be eight hours a day and 44 hours a week; minimum wage for workers to be fixed by law; old age, unemployment and sick pen sions; government to own and oper ate the banking business of the country; nationalization of unused lands; incomes of individuals to be limited; national initiative, referen dum and recall; applcation of the "home rule" principle in State, coun ty and citv government; condemna tion of government by injunction; repeal of the espionage law and all other repressive statutes passed dur ing the war; condemnation of uni versal military training and con scription; a demand for international disarmament to prevent future wars; immediate release of all political and industrial prisoners; nationalization of all public utilities and all basic in dustries; criminal prosecution of profiteers an dexploiters of labor; demand for free speech, tree press and right of free assembly; demand that all government work be done by day labor instead of by contract; equal pay for men and women. Under the arrangement Great Britain will receive 70 per cent of the total ton nage, France 10 per cent. Italy 10 per cent, Japan 8 per cent and the United States 2 per cent. CONTRACT FOR AUTO TAGS The automobile tags to be used in North Carolina next year will cost $11,250. The secretary of state awarded the contract to the West ern Plate Company for 135,000 plates at 8 1-3 cents each. They will be delivered some- time in May.
