C, as second-class mail matter ; . Subscription Rates One year - -$2.00 Six months l.-.OO Three months -50 j . . j Advertising rates on application I Telephone No. 54 1 THURSDAY. DECEMBER 2:?. 1920 : SPITE WORK "Spite work" has bi-en ttv term 1 used r"jtardinjr the action .if the Car olina & Northwestern railway official'5 in changing trains No. 'i and N 55 into a local mixed freight, causing the train to reach I.enoir '.ate every day. Until a few dajs ago the local freight wurk between Lenoir and Hickory was done '' an exclusive freight trian. The alleged action of the officials in adding the work of this freight to the work of the mixed freight and passenger tra il due here at 10:.'i0 a. r.. was contrary to the orders of the Corporation Commis sion. It was the stated intent. on of the railroad to discontinue the mixed train altogether. It was then, when i he people of I.enoir protested and took the matter up before the Cor poration Commission, and upon the adverse ruling of the commission, i that the railroad offie;a! side-st'-ppod and took off the freight. At the same 1 time they added the worK of the freight to that of the pa.-senuer tra:n. which resulted :n ;iUut the same thing as takinc ell' th.' p i-engi-r tram altogether For years it seem.- that :ii; same sort (f spirit on the part of the man agement of tne Carolina it North western has existed towards I.enoir. (iranite Palis and th.s ent.ro end of the line. It cannot be termed any thing else than a spirit to take away from patrons of this end of the i.ne everything possible. Train- haw been taken otf and schedules changed 1 and no protest has ever been made ' except to officials of that company. Years ago it was realized that noth ing could be secured in this way. When the Chamber of Commerce was notified of the change in ques tion it was decided to take the m itter ummediately before tile Corporation Comm's-:o:i. The dec.sion was con trary to the pi, ms of tin- railroad, and now it i- hedging. Why such a spirit should exist . beyond all reason. ng, but that it does exist, an, I greatly to the disadvantage of Lenoir, is apparent. Evidence of this adwrs feeing towards i.-no r may be sei-n clearly in tin- fact that of every branen line operated direct ly or ,nd. redly by the Southern Rail way system l.eiin.r h. most .nad equate service to lie found. The line from Charlotte to Taylorv;'le does not have near the number of large towns and railway connections as that of the Carolina V Northwestern 1 between Chester and Lenoir. Take the branch line from Hendersonville to Brevard. On this line there are two passenger trains each way every day, and in summer one extra pas senger train each way is run "very day. MRS. C. L. ROBBINS ENTERTAINS THE MOZART CLUB The Mozart Club of this city en joys the distinction of numbering among its members two of the brides of the approaching Christmas sea son. Miss Mary Willie Ivey of Lenoir and Miss Margaret Martin of Salis bury. Complimentary to these young women, Mrs. C. L. Robbins enter tained the club on the afternoon of Tuesday. Nov. 30, at her home on North Main street. The short business meeting of the club was followed by a delightful mu sical program consisting of vocal and instrumental numbers, and fittingly brought to a close by Mendelssohn's "Overture" to "A Midsummer Night's Pream." always suggestive of nuptial occasions. Follow. r.g the program, the guests were shown into the dining room, where they found the club colors, violet and white, carried out most effect el. The hostess served a de licious salad course, followed by frappe and da.nty candies in the pre va.l.iig colors.
