The latest report fr. m th Km pire State to the i-iVeet that Alfred C. Cuapm, the popular mayor of Brooklyn, will be presen ted to the Democratic State Con vention for nomination to the uflu'eof Governor of New Yoik. Here we see the same controlling inilaence. As mayor of the city of BrooklU Mr ( htpiu can name the delegates of the Kings county Democracy, anil it as asserted that "as Kings county goes so goes the State of New York." The friends of Mayor Cm pin say that the probabilities are that he will win. They affirm that he has given unmistakable evidence of his fitness to be Governor, ol his abili ty to sustain the full dignity of that office according to the Demo cratic standard: of bis right to be ranked with the most etilighted public men of our generation. It is said that the nomination of Mayor Cbap.n will be opposed by Governor Hill and approved by the mends of Kx President Cleveland. Hut, this isonly conjecture, as the mayor has not been pronounced in bus advocacy of the nomination of either Mr. Cleveland or Governor Hill Our chief object in this editorial is to draw attention to the fact that political ower in this country is passing from the hands of the pec- pie, and is being centered in or ganizations controlled by personal preferences. It will be a bad omen for the Republic when machine politics gains the mastery. liecent events have brought Iowa promiently to tbe front. it win De remembered tuat lor a long time Iowa w.vs overwhelming ly Republican. At the last State election it went democratic, and Mr. I?oies was elected governor. More than a week ago the Demo crats met in convention arjd renom inated Gov. Hoies on the time honored Democratic platform. On Wednesday, the 1st of duly, the Republicans of Iowa assembled in convention and nominated, as their candidate for Governor II. C. Wheeler, a large land owner and practical farmer. They adopted a Republican Prohibition. Free Trade-Protective Tariff platform. It is claimed that the nomination of sach a candidate on such a plat form defeats tho Third Party movement in Iowa. Iu the convention the Harrison Administration was mildly en dorsed, while every mention of laine was wildv applauded. e have seen that the tanners of New York, Massachusetts, Ver mont anil Iowa have repudiated the Third Party movement and will vote with the Republicans or the Democrats as their individual preferences incline them. Looking to the States men tioned as indicating the way the wind blows, it appears that the great political battle of 1 ' will be fought out by the Republican and Democratic parties, the Re publicans having their strenght in' the North and Kast.and the Demo- I erats mustering strongest in the' South and the West. ; This being the case, it tucinos; every Southern man tolas aside all; eatangitng alliances and .-: ind by . the Democrat ;c par's. Speak ol the riches of quarries and mines of the Gold Leaf of the tobacco belt: what are these in eomparrison with the product ofour truck farms? It is a very hard problem to de termine the value of farming lands in the vicinity of New Rerne. Gather the best fruits" of these farms; select sam ples of the best timber in our for es': make a display of fish and game and New Heme's exhibit will be at least epual to the best. The Clerk of the Superior Court of this connty has made arrangements with the cleiks of the other coun ties in North Carolina in which di rect taxes were paid by which a uni form system of fees will be charged. It is agreed that on each certiticate given to those who paid the tax twenty five cents will be charged. When parties are dead their per sonal representatatives making affidavits, or executors and admin istrators, will be charged one dollar, which ia half the usual fee in such cases. Although the Gov ernor is in receipt of numerous applications from counties to which the list has been sent, no warrants so far have been issued. The books containing names are being sent out in alphabetical order of counties, and regular payments will not commence untill all the counties that paid the tax are snp plied. The State Treasurer will arrange for the banks in the dif ferent counties and towns to take up the warrants, making it more convenient for parties and avoid ing a rush on the department.
