C.January 15; A meeting which will be of vast im portance to all cities that have mari time interests will be held in Washing ton, D. C, January 15. It is the River and Harbor Congress and from the name one may easily know the motive. Of coarse it will have the attention of the National Congress for there are members of the minor body who ate also members of the great body of law makers and there cannot but be an ab sorbing interest taken on this impor tant theme. ' ' " There has been much slackness about our water ways here and it is up to the people to show that they wantimprove menta made in the rivers and sounds of this section that will make them ade quate for every demand of commerce and safe for seamen. While there has been an appropriation made for some improvement of our rivers and the bus iness men should show some apprecia tion and interest by sending a delega. ti n to Washington on this occasion. Norfolk will send a large committee as will a'scr, Washington, Elizabeth City, Wilmington and other places deriving an income irom marine commerce. Should there not beany immediate good obtained and that is not at all proba- ble the discussions that will be heard there will warrant the trouble and ex- Dense of attending. The Chamber of Commerce should designate some good men who shall represent our interests in a proper manner. " I ShepardY Moving Picture Coming. - The coming engagement of Archie L. A grand and glorious day for St. Stephens A. M. E. Z. Church, occasion of the demonstration of friendship be tween the New Bern District and Washington District, although divided, still united. A brand new pulpit hav ing been promised by Bro. J. A.' Nor wood, we had previously arranged for the reception of the same,- together with the many friends of Beaufort, which was a grand affair. I feel happy to state that Divine Providence smiled upon us with unusual remarkably favor able weather for a November Sunday. The sun rose warm and bright and shined like a summer day. Our Sunday School was unusually largely attended, and a fair congregation to our eleven o'clock sendee. As per program the nfternnAn service came on, which was a little delayed by a large and even un expected multitude of highly esteemed Christian friends from Beaufort, there beine two boat loads instead of one, numbering over two hundred people by actual count, and others left desiring to come, the vast number when they arrived in our town, was very surpris ing, from a biblical standpoint or view, it Incited like "Samson's foxes turned loose in the Philistines corn." . First in order devotional exercises were opened by the pastor of Purvis Chapel, his excellent choir and congre gation, Miss Victoria Boyd organist; next came the welcome address by our very popular mayor, Hon. Chas. S. Wallace which was able ana aigmnea, and was in like manner responded to by Rev. Prof. D. Wilder, pastor of Congregational Church, and . principal of High School at Beaufort. The pres entation of the new pulpit was then made, and the removal of the old one bv the donor," Bro. J. A. Norwood, to- trether with his 'Sunday School class, headed by several young laaies, wno presented a pretty and well formed wreath and bouquets of flowers to dec orate the same. 5 The presentation ad dress was then made briefly, pointedly but spiritually by Rev Jas. H. Moseley, after which the pulpit was impressively dedicated to the Use of the church by the imposition of the hands of all the .preachers present The acceptation re marks in behalf of our church by tnat noted, scholarly and well known rep resentative Christian gentleman, Hon. W. L. Arendell, State Senator,, his re: marks were thoughtful, spiritual and appreciated by all. Collection .was taken and resulted in nearly $25, Beau fort people donating J9, St. Stephens SS.22. and our sister Baptist Sat. Luke Church $4.88; heartfelt thanks. Owing to the overflowing congregation hun dreds of people could not participate In the collection, but still have an oppor tunity to help at their convenience. The servi"es were interspersed with melodious, well- selected music. The crowd is estimated to be six or seven hundred people, a mixed multitude of White and colored. ; , Our services closed with church ex tension exercises at night with the Wild wood choir participating; 25 sweet little children dressed in white surrounded the altar, arranged by a special com mittee to open with. The music was rendered by St, Stephen's choir andHhe Wildwood choir in rotation, both sang sweetly- "The , Wildwood .choir justly deserve special mention, coming from the country. , Grand total received during the day about $65, for all pur poses. Organists Misses Lovy Jones and Rhoda Green. Thus ends a glorious day for More head City, a record breaker. The fervent effectual prayer of u righteous man availeth much. . J. S.
