C, as second-class- mutter. New Bern. -N. C, April 5, 1907. THE ADVERTISEMENT OF COM HIMTIKS. It is only reeenUr that the adver tising idea of making known the re sources and possibilities of a town, city or state, has become a regular thing, not incidental H i not the new town, unknown to even map makers, tliat 'twiay is prominent In advertising Itself:' The large cities lire in the advertising Held, to attract new men and Jiew business. A short time ago. Boston entered upon an ad vertising campaign, by making appro priation fur Ibis matter. In the state of Washington, a bill was introduced for an appropriation in the legisla ture for $liii,i'MH),. lor the purpose of advertising that slate. These are but siilfle instance. There are many others, and each new advertiser means that other cities and states must enter upon a campagn of ad vertising, or like the merchant, who thinks his goods will sell themselves, without advertising, they will be left behind in the struggle of progress and advancement. Outside of the advertising cam paign, two things may lie undertaken bv every community, which will prove of great value,- as advertising Ihe benefits that the people of a commun ity enjoy. The first Is a low lax rate, which is really based upon the sec ond, namely, a good local administra tion, with men of wisdom and ex perience in charge of the communi ty's interests, as 'officials, mayor, alil- . a '- . .... erineu and the heads of departments. It is the well managed. municipality that becomes known to outsiders, and attracts men and capital. And It will lie found, that the municipality which is wisely and economically adminis tered, is the one that will spend money to advertise itself. It has the goods to advertise, anil wants the public to know it. two mroiu'Avr local imms TKIAL MOVEMENTS. While every reader of the Journal knows of local developments, yet it is hut natural that local matters do not impress so forcibly, as might the hap penings in a nearby city. Two events of the greatest local industrial Im portance, are constantly before the people of this city. Their success Is not merely that those associated in business relations, in each, are to he .gainers, thereby, but nuno, Ihls cltj and section will profit us both these local Industries prosper. The first the Journal calls nlten tion to, la that of the Carolina Taper Pulp Company which proposes to manufacture paper pulp from articles that have practically no Intrinsic value, but which through scientific process, develops a product of coin- mercutl valuer. The building up of this Industry, into a success ' means much for the labor, and trade in . terests'of New Bern. The second" Industry is not ot the - ... manufacturing, kind, hut one which seeks to bring, Into this section, men with money to invest In lands and timber, and to Induce men to come In, buy and cultivate the country. The people seeking to do this, are known as the Southern Land and Improve ment Company. What this means, Is what Ihe penult of this section have long usked, that men With money to "invest, or nietr'willliig to work, should come into this section,, and assist In its development ' i , V It is not too' much to ask, that those who undertake to prooiute local In dustries, should receive a support equal to the needs and importance of the projects at tempted. Their suc cess, mean community and section .1 i ! nil. !U t,l HI cinowm. i !..:' J 'olucuk Kays lis city In 1904had a" population of ,07,000, ' according ttvi$pe AvorfctyjMTi report MfThl$:jwsi a lainfW 46.'j j irora iwo, wjui jverrgta s j)puiaiigi t4(? ccnSus bureau, - whose figures can be ques tioned jis to. correctness. .
