Franklin St. - Open Till 10 P.M. Yankees And Grits: What's In A Name STUDENT OPINION Grit Yankee. These words are used widely on campus, but can they be strictly defined? A grit lives south of the Mason Dixon Line, and a Yankee lives north of it. But to students it's not quite that simple. Here are some definitions given by students from both sides of the line: , , - Ken Saunders, junior, Groton, Mass. "A grit is a tradition - bound Southerner with his mind closed to change or anything that imposes on his traditional way of life, He's a person who can't start his day without, grits for breakfast mere re nice; guys, but when I find one who is bound by tradi tion, I feel sorry for him." Calvin Deans, junior, Selma "Yankees are generally a little arrogant and a little cockv. They think their mode - of dress beats our's, arid that we're behind or out of it just because we don't dress the way they do. Their sense of. humor, is not as wide as ours, they take tnings too seriously." .;. Warren Bloom, sophomore, Bridgeport Conn. '-" "Take a left at Pittsboro Street, ride for 10 minutes, take an other left. A fellow comes out of the house with a shotgun and before you can open your mouth, he says: 'Git offrt' mah prop erty, boys!' That's a grit." -.rr::--: v.: - - Bill Hatch, senior, Birmingham, Afa. "In general Yankees don't -dress as well as we do. They are abrupt and lack manners, probably because of the fast pace they are used to. They're always running, around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off. They live like ants. New York City is the biggest of any anthill I've ever seen. Rosemary Simpson, freshman, Washington "A grit is someone who wears V-neck sweaters and weejuns, hates the North and can't speak English. They hate big cities and they generally don't know what's going on. They are afraid to be different. They make lousey dates." Jule McMichael, senior, Reidsville "Some Yankees here seem to feel like they should be head men on campus, and when they're not, they slide over to some group that causes a lot of trouble around here." Evan Harrar, senior .Westport, Conn. "A grit on this campus is a North Carolinian whose universe ends at the state borders. The grit takes on the attitudes of his fellows and never questions their meanings.; They say a lot, but communicate nothing." -Donald Singleton, junior, Morganton "Yankee is just the Southern -word for an individual who is better educated, more aware of life per se, certainly more so phisticated, and in general shrewder in any type of deal. It's a word that means jealousy to the typical Southerner."' WILL CHE? ..woufd you sr you FOR SALE: GUITAR GUILD electric guitar. Excellent condi- tion $375.00.
