Split end Peter Davis and fullback Tommy Dempsey are definitely counted out of action for the Tar Heels. Both were leaders of the 1967 UNC offense. Davis, a 6-3, 178 senior from Clarksville, Va., was the top Carolina receiver last year with 30 catches for 338 yards. Dempsey, also a senior, was the second-leading Tar Heel rusher in 1967 with 501 yards, 130 carries. Davis is suffering from a separated shoulder while Dempsey is recovering from a wrenched knee. Junior Bill Dodson will eplace Davis at end. Dodson was ineligible last season but was the Tar Heels' placement kicker in 1966. The loss of Dempsey has caused a fluid situation in the backfleld. With the pennant already clinched, Detroit manager Mayo Smith turned the reins over to Horton and Cash made the job look easy with a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run blast in the sixth, both off starter and loser Mel Stottlemyre, now 20-12. Stottlemyre allowed another run in the sixth on Jim Northrup's double and Eddie Mothowc' rtin-scoring single.
