East Asian culture b the topic for the 1974
Carolina Symposium to begin Thursday,
March 21 and continue" through Thursday,
April 4.
The symposium, "East Asia: Perspectives
and Projections," will examine religion,
politics, economics, medicine, music, art and
poetry.
Featured speakers include Pulitzer Prize
winner David Halberstam, author of the best
best-selling book The Best and the Brightest,
concerning United States involvement in
Vietnam and Frances Fitzgerald, author of
Fire in the Lake.
Other speakers include Ross Terrill, CBS
news commentator d'iring President Nixon's
trip to China and Edwin Reisehauer, former
ambassador to Japan.
The Symposium is a bi-annual project,
alternating each year with the Fine Arts
Festival. The public is admitted free to all
programs except the Martial Arts
Exhibition and the Peking Opera. Tickets
for these events will be available at the union
desk.

Tickets
senior Asian studies major, has coordinated
the project with the help of 15 students.
Crimmins said he got the idea for the
program when he visited Korea, Japan and
Southeast Asia two years ago.
Approximately $15,000 will be spent on
this year's program. It is funded by the
Campus Governing Council's $3,000
allocation and donations by various
academic departments, outside foundations,
private donors and fraternities and
sororities.
