Bill Haley, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry raised it to that level in the late '50s. British rockers such as Eric Clapton borrowed from Elmore James and others in order to use their electrified axes to revitalize the blues. Finally, Jimi Hendrix took the guitar to its highest heights with his almost-blashpemous experimentation. The recently released albums of three young guitarists: Robin Trower, Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton uphold this tradition. For Earth Below (Chrysalis) is the third albm by Robin Trower, the spiritual heir to Hendrix. Trower left Procol Harum to pursue a solo career, but was quickly prejudged to be a Hendrix ripoff. But For Earth Below firmly establishes Trower as a unique and original guitarist who constantly explores new territory; not a Hendrix Now Through Saturday- hE-INVENTORY SALE Going, Going, Gone Table Price dropped to 6t each today, and what's left Saturday will be FREE! Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton U M imitator, but someone who has used the influence and ideas Jimi left behind as aids in the development of his own adventurous style. From such rockers as "Shame the Devil" and "Gonna Be More Suspicious," to more dreamily textured pieces as "It's Only DTDIUI by George Bacso Money" and the title track, Trower shows the control and versatility that distinguishes his sound from mere imitators of Hendrix. One problem a guitarist in a three-piece group faces, is that his work can seem repetitive at times but is needed to create the power necessary for an overall heavy sound. Trower's guitar is the focal point, but Bill Lordan's drums and James Dewar's bass provide a solid rhythmic undercurrent, and Dewar's excellent vocals serve as a perfect counterpoint. So What (ABC) is also Joe Walsh's third album since striking out on his own, but it is essentially his first actual solo LP. So What showcases Walsh in a variety of roles, from guitarist extraordinaire to bassist, keyboard player and vocalist, as well as co-producer. Walsh is not backed on every track by a steady backup band as he was on his earlier efforts. As a result, his multiple talents are displayed. "Welcome to the Club" and "Time Out" ar; two real rockers propelled by Walsh's stunning leads. "Turn to Stone," a song originally done on Walsh's second LP, is giyen a shot in the arm here. "Help Me Through the Night" and "Song for Emma" are tasteful and moving ballads and provide a change of pace. But the album's brightest spots are P J.'s 0 OOGi o OXPKPOOOiffiO o n 11 JS I 175 E. "Falling Down" is a lyrical experiment which finds Walsh in a very secure and capable vocal role, assisted by Eagle Don Henley. "Pa vane" is an excerpt from Ravel's Mother Goose Suite that reveals Walsh's Moog and Arp synthesizer talents. "County Fair" is an example of great guitar work aided by the innovations of a modern recording studio. Backward echo is used to give the effect of hearing the echo of Walsh's guitar licks before the actual notes are heard. So What is an album which should produce a better reaction than its title suggests. Peter Frampton also left an established group (Humble Pie) to try his hand at a solo career. Frampton, his fourth album, is clean, cheerful, unpretentious and simply pleasurable. Frampton's leanings are more towards pop and blues, and he presents a variety of melodic ballads, instrumentals and subdued rockers paced by some fine acoustic guitar work and accentuated by infectuous electric playing. Various styles are offered with equal aplomb: "(I'll Give You) Money" is a raucous rocker, with large, heavy guitar chords. "Penny For Your Thoughts" is an acoustic guitar instrumental reminiscent of the Allman Brothers"Little Martha." "Show Me the Way" features a demonstration of the capabilities of a Stratocaster and a talk box and is the obvious choice for the album's single. Frampton is an excellent guitarist, and his playing here is clean and sharp, although his riffs uometimes remain tantalizingly in the background. The difference is the tremendous increase in Frampton's songwriting ability. These lyrics are not throwaways, and Frampton finally has vocals befitting his fine voice. The production is very good with John Siomos (drums) and Andy Brown (bass) providing solid support. Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh and Robin Trower are all young, veteran guitarists whose recent recordings serve to justify their solo careers and the three remain the latest in a long line of rock guitar superstars.
