Davie, a member of the committee seeking a site for the University, stopped his horse for a drink near New Hope Chapel and before re mounting, stuck his switch into the ground. From it sprang the Davie Poplar. The insert picture was taken about 1920 when the Davie Poplar was filled with cement after being struck by lightning. The small tree to its left is the Davie Poplar Jr., planted by the class of 1918. In the larger picture, the Davie Jr. towers today alongside its namesake. tlx r1 ' 4.
