Exciting 'Joseph' concludes tour By JEFF GROVE Ails Editor The Carolina Union's 1983-84 Broad way on Tour season came to a rousing, lighthearted conclusion Friday and Satur day with three performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Memorial Hall. The musical, created in 1968 and ex panded over the years to its present 90-minute length, tells the biblical story of Joseph. Sold into slavery by his 11 brothers, Joseph is taken to Egypt, where his ability to interpret dreams elevates him to the heights of Egypt's govern ment. The story is faithfully told, with one major exception God is left out of the story. While this does open the story up to people outside Judeo-Christian religion, it also strips the story of much of its wonder. During the show, however, the au dience never has time to think long enough to question the omission. The performers in the touring com pany lived up to the show's style, going about their work with impromptu con fidence and brassiness. Robin Boudreau reveled in her role as the narrator. She never simply related events. More of a go-between, she con veyed messages back and forth between the performers and the audience. Matching Boudreau's bright presence, Don Goodspeed made a squeaky-clean Joseph. It was easy to see how his brothers could misinterpret his attitudes as priggishness, but he never fell to empty boasting. His singing was also pleasant. Other standouts included Hal Davis as an Elvis-impersonating Pharaoh; Charlie Serrano and Joseph's brother Naphtali, who regaled the audience with a delightful calypso number; and Evelyn S. Ante as a slinkly, sensuous Mrs. Potiphar, whose attempts to seduce Joseph were eleborate but inoffensive. Tony Tanner's staging was inventive , and amusing. Tanner amplified the show's fun with cowboy hats and a hoe down for the country-western "One More Angel in Heaven" and a wine coun try setting for the Gallic nostalgia piece "Those Canaan Days." Clever exploitation of Karl Eigsti's minimal but colorful sets helped to keep the show from dragging during scene changes. The multiple curtains and revolving set pieces, in fact, added to the show's vaudeville atmosphere. Judith Dolan seemed to have designed her costumes from the standpoint of what a first-grade Christmas pageant would look like if the school in question had a huge production budget. This was definitely appropriate for Joseph's child like simplicity. Musical director Valerie pebert drove her nine-piece pit band with energy suiting the levels on stage. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is not a great musical, but it is a very good one that offers excitement and hummable tunes. This production added the joie de vivre that can make it memorable, enchanting piece of musical . theatre. "I would wait around in my apartment from 10 to 5 every day for a month," Lanigan said. "Sometimes people would show up." Eventually a few people gave him encouragement, and The Village Voice gave him a review. Lanigan now works at New York's Holly Solomon gallery. Lanigan feels influenced by celebrity portratist An dy Warhol and filmmaker John Waters, whose, movies, such as Pink Flamingos and Polyester take popular culture through many of its seedier possibilities. Lanigan said he admires Warhol and Waters for their "ability to seduce through life image." Of his work in general, Lanigan said, "I look to New Jersey for culture. I speak for it to New York." ' "Of course, I guess there's always a way, but I don't know of one," he added. Wartman said he did not know of any cases of employee computer crime in the Wachovia system. An additional protection against this type of crime is that it takes two workers to restock or service the banking machines, he said. The Justice Department report said that physical at tacks on machines to obtain cash or on cardholders " who had made a withdrawal was another type of crime associated with electronic banking. Wartman said vandalism, not robbery attempts, was Wachovia's main problem of this type, although about six months ago someone did run into the machine on the wall of the University Mall branch with a car.- "They missed most of the machine, but they couldn't have gotten the money anyway," he said. "The machine is really just a dispenser with a vault behind it." That person was never caught, but people who are seen vandalizing machines are often reported by others who "realize that this keeps Jhem from using the machine," Wartman said. Both Wartman and Poole said that attacks on machine users making withdrawals are a serious pro blem. "We try to put our machines in conspicuous places and keep them well-lighted," Poole said. Wartman said customers should try to avoid using machines when alone, especially at night. i T i iin iiTi A nii in i ii i i fS A. .iff i. fff ..i i ifn i m.. . i j .. n ..nt .A.. i . i irT irr iffi irPi ifii ij V r m m A M A q, A M m ih m A i m z I U " SPECIAL PROJECTS Carolina Union I fy Activities Board 170 Applications at V Q Union Desk ) W ilfcr?r?ft fBrri Ttrrfl ffhi ) -Jir7Xld IT) i-CJL?
