2The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, March 14, 1984 poll From page 1 the two-term governor held a whopping 56 percent lo 36 percent lead. Last spring, the margin was 54 per cent to 32 percent. Since last fall. Hunt's support has eroded in nearly every vorer category except blacks, the poll showed. Philip Meyer, UNC Kenan Professor of Jour nalism, said he was not surprised at Helms' strong showing because a February poll by The Charlotte Observer showed "similar results. "Helms has out spent Hunt about four to one in the media, and his campaign has more of a thematic con sistency," Meyer said of Helms rise in the polls. About 50 University students helped Meyer and Sms. Brown, assistant professor of journalism, in conduc ting the poll. About 1,200 adults around the state responded. Allen said the pofl showed that "people are beginn ing to see Hunt's true record in education, spending, taxes, etc. They're starting to see that his record and his rhetoric bear no resemblance." But Bass said Hunt was not losing support. "He's gaining," she said. "Sen. Helms has desperately been trying to get a lead and has been unable to so far. He's spent about 14 million, and for an incumbent who's been in office II years, that's pretty sad." White respondents favored Helms 52 percent to 40 percent, whereas last fall Hunt led among whites 51 percent to 41 percent. Blacks, however, remained firmly in the Hunt camp preferring him 86 percent to 8 percent for Helms. In a separate Carolina Poll released Tuesday, Democrats Rufus Edmisten and Eddie Knox are tied for the lead in their party's gubernatorial nomination race. Each were favored by 20 percent of the 587 Democrats who said they planned to vote in the May 8 primary. Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green and former state Commerce Secretary D.M. "Lauch" Faircloth each received 13 percent, followed by Insurance Commissioner John Ingram with 10 percent and former state legislator Tom Gilmore with 4 percent. Edmisten, Knox and .Green improved their stan dings since last month's Charlotte Observer poll, while support for the other candidates remained un changed, according to the Carolina Poll. Clarification The Campus Governing Council Finance Committee did not award funds Monday night. They recommended funds be appropriated. The full CGC must ap prove the funding before it can be awarded. State and ation The Associated Press WASHINGTON The Senate In telligence Committee voted Tuesday to set aside an additional $21 million for aid to anti-government rebels in leftist Nicaragua and allow the Reagan ad ministration to spend $7 million of it immediately. A committee source said the com promise plan, which still requires ap proval of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the House and Senate, was accepted by the administration, which is pressing hard for more aid to Central America. Under the compromise, proposed "Sy Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, D-Hawaii, the remaining $14 million would go into a contingency fund controlled by the director of the . Central Intelligence Agency. WASHINGTON Edwin Meese III agreed Tuesday to return to testify at re opened hearings on his confirmation as attorney general after Senate Democrats pressed for new sessions on his nomina tion. Senate Judiciary Committee spokesman Mark Goodin said Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C, committee chairman, had asked Meese to return, and that the White House counselor, through aides, "has indicated he will return if it is necessary." . , . t RALEIGH A federal appeals court Tuesday denied James W. Hutchins' request for a stay of execu tion by lethal injection for the 1979 murders of three law enforcemeni officers.
