Atlnletes9 grounp to hold .pee meetim The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, September 16 , 19373 By HELEN JONES StaffWriter Kay Yow, N.C. State University basketball coach, will speak at an open meeting of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Monday at 8:30 p.m. in Kenan Field House. Also, former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Wallace Francis will speak to varsity athletes Sunday at a free banquet. Francis was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1973. After playing for them one year, he was traded to the Falcons. He played for the Falcons until 1982. FCA is a non-denominational group open to all UNC students. It focuses on athletics from a Christian perspective, publicity director Carrie Serwetnyk said Monday. The banquet at Koury Natatorium is part of an assertive outreach program planned for this fall. Kelly Williams, a women's track team member and the banquet coor dinator, said the banquet will be a good opportunity to show UNC athletes that they are FCA's primary concern. Yow, who will be the head coach for the 1988 Women's Olympic basketball team, is the co-sponsor for FCA at N.C. State. "It's a special group of athletes who have Christ at the center of all they're doing," Yow said Tuesday. Yow coached U.S. women's bas ketball teams at the 1986 World Championships and at the Goodwill Games in Moscow. Both teams won gold medals. In addition to retreats, speakers arid small "huddle" group Bible study, FCA is active in intramural sports. It also has a weekly group which offers counseling to inmates of C.A. Dillon School, a maximum security prison for juvenile delin quents in Butner. . Trash cam odors oiBFend senses, of Pit-sitters By JUSTIN McGUIRE Staff Writer Students walking by the trash cans near the Pit recently have been hit with an unpleasant surprise. UNC officials said Tuesday they don't know what's causing the five trash cans to smell. Police Matt Mlekush, associate director of facilities management, said he didn't know why the smell has become particularly noticeable. MI understand that on some days it's worse than others. It's hard to tell why." The warm weather and the from page 1 nel officials. "According to the procedure, I'm supposed to get a reply within five calendar working days," Caldwell said. "It's been almost three weeks." Caldwell said he was told to attend the meeting last week with the other officers, but didn't go because he had already discussed his specific grievan ces with personnel officials. Edwards, who was present at last week's meeting, said she was not satisfied with the University's proposal. "You can apply all you want to, but the administrators are going to make their own recommendations as to who gets what," she said. "If we (the officers who filed grievances) really get an equal chance at the promotions, why didn't they do what we asked and rescind all 12?" she said. Both Caldwell and Edwards said they had talked to lawyers about continuing with their appeals. Edwards, the only black woman on the force, said she intends to appeal to the state personnel office in Raleigh and to the Equal Employ ment Opportunity Commission. She also said she would talk to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) about taking her case. "It's a waste of time for me to go any further in this University," she said. "I have to go outside. The University is a closed door." Caldwell said he would go on to the next step in the University grievance procedure by appealing to the chancellor, after he receives a reply from - the Personnel Department. increased activity around the Pit are possible reasons, he said. "It's the beginning of the year and maybe there's more of a gathering (around the Pit)," he said. Some of the trash liners have split open, causing trash to fall into the cans, he said. But, he said, new liners that don't split were recently purchased. Mlekush also said that the com bination of trash spilling in the cans and the warm weather attracts bugs, perhaps causing the smell. The University employs a man assigned to empty the garbage cans in the Pit and surrounding areas. "He walks around all day and tries to stay on top of it," Mlekush said. "But the trash cans fill up fast in between classes, and sometimes it's hard to keep up with." The University may need two employees to keep up with the influx of trash, he said. t The concrete cans in the Pit are cleaned only once a year because the process is complicated, Mlkekush said. The University's metal trash cans are steam-cleaned three times a year. Homecoinflimg conurt selection to begin By JUDY WILSON Staff Writer The Carolina Athletic Associa tion will be accepting applications for homecoming queen and home coming attendants until this Fri day, according to Michael Tester, the CAA's vice president for homecoming. Senior women who have grade point averages of at least 2.5 may apply. "We're looking for someone who's a good representative of the University and who's done a lot for the University," Tester said. "It's not a beauty contest. Appli cants will be judged on grades as well as involvement in extracur ricular activities." Student groups may sponsor applicants, and there is a $10 application fee. There will be a screening process; faculty members will interview those who meet qualifications to avoid bias, Tester said. People selected to be on the homecoming court will be notified and presented in the Pit. Between six and 10 homecoming attendants will be chosen. He could not give an exact number because that will depend on the number of appli cations the CAA receives and on how many of the applicants are qualified. Students will choose from among the homecoming attend ants and vote for homecoming queen on Oct. 8. The winner will be announced at the homecoming football game against Wake Forest on Oct. 10. The CAA will give the home coming queen in-state tuition and fees for one semester and two student lower-level season basket ball tickets. Local merchants will donate other prizes. "The selection is basically the same as it was last year," Tester said. "The qualifications have changed a little. It's not open to just any senior girl." It brings out the best in all of us." You've just proofread your term paper and it's got typos, spelling errors and misplaced paragraphs. Now, you can't hand in a paper like this. So no matter how tired you are, you've got to retype the entire thing. That is, unless you typed it on a Videowriter The Videowriter solves all your typing problems. Take the most obvious one: typos. On an ordinary typewriter it would mean a bottle of white-out and a frus trating interruption. Iff On a Videowriter it just means press ing the key marked "delete." That's all. Because you type your work on a screen before you print it on a page. It edits. . And how about those bigger problems like wanting to rearrange paragraphs? On an ordinary typewriter you have to "cut and paste" them. On a Videowriter you only have to press the key marked "move" and then indicate the area you want it moved to. It's that simple. It spells. What happens when you're typing and you come to a word you can't spell? On an ordinary typewriter you have to stop typing, find a dictionary and look it up. Not so on a Videowriter. Spelling problems can be corrected simply by pressing the key marked "spell." It counts words. If you've ever had a teacher tell you to write a thousand word essay, you know what a pain it is trying to count your words. On an ordinary typewriter you have to do it with your finger. But on a Videowriter you can press a mere two vat.. . w buttons and it does the-counting for you. It makes multiple copies. From time to time you want a copy of what you've typed, right? Well, if you use a Videowriter you won't have to go to the school library to look for a copier machine. All you'll have to look for is the button marked "print." Press it and the Videowriter wiil make another original. And because your work is auto matically stored on a standard 6 V2 noppy aisK, you can ?:?:. malfo thnco rnnioc w.wv, v,v,p.v.o whenever you want. It obviously does a lot more than type. That's because the word Dro- '-ts cessine features iust eo on and on. What's more, we sell the Videowriter Word Processor for around the price of a good electronic typewriter. And that's quite a bargain when you consider the amount of time it'll save you. Time you can spend doing the work for your other classes. You would do that, wouldn't you? O KM?
