The Daily Tar Parking rales differ for moped riders By LYNNE McCUNTOCK Staff Writer Students with motorcycles and motor scooters must have parking permits and park in the designated parking spaces to avoid tickets, Mary Fox, UNC parking control coordinator, said Monday. But moped riders may park without parking permits at bicycle racks, Fox said. The difference between motor cycles, motor scooters and mopeds is that the first two don't have pedals, said John Rail, sales manager of Kawasaki Suzuki of Chapel Hill, motorcycle sales and services. "Basically, mopeds have pedals and do not require a helmet, license or insurance," Rail said. Chairman always use mpre space," Sanders said. "But, the University hasnt told us yet how we can gain this space." Sanders was appointed chairman of the committee by Chancellor Christopher Fordham. Wright said, "He really should not have been appointed to the chair man's position. Not only is it unfair to him, but it is also unfair to the ones who live there since the one who wants our property is being our judge." At the Faculty Council meeting Friday, Fordham said he had not received any complaints about San ders' appointment. The land-use committee, formed after the land-use plan received widespread criticism this summer, will make recommendations to the chancellor and Chapel Hill mayor in January. Fox said the tickets are given when motorcycles or motor scoot ers are parked without a valid permit, or when they are parked in automobile spaces instead of the designated motorcycle spaces. Town resident Charles Shaffer, another member of the land-use committee, said he has no objection to Sanders' appointment. "It's definitely true that the Insti tute of Government is seeking more space," Shaffer said. "But I don't think this had anything to do with the chancellor's decision to appoint Mr. Sanders as chairman." ZJrtschool Fall Arts Classes Sept. 28 - Nov. 21 V
