I hope to go to the right opportunity where I can play some minutes and learn," Anderson said. "Coming here is a longshot. I don't know if they want to pick a guard with the number one spot. She joined Bright on the all tournament team at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational. Sturgis meets NCAA requirements, signs with UNC Oscar Sturgis, an All-America at Richmond County High School in Rockingham, signed an athletic grant last Friday to play football at UNC after meeting the NCAA'sacademic require ments for incoming freshmen. Sturgis, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound tight end, played football last fall for Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. He had committed to North Carolina after his senior season but failed to meet the NCAA Proposition 48 minimum score of 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Sturgis found out he met the re quirements last week when he received his most recent SAT results in the mail. Mike Thomas, a teammate of Sturgis at Richmond County who also failed to make the minimum SAT score in high school, met the requirements in April and has already signed with UNC. Tho mas, who also played at Fork Union last season, was an All-America quarter back and punter in high school. He and Sturgis led Richmond County to con secutive state 4-A championships. visits Hornets control." The Hornets, who finished 26-56 in their third season, are in need of a point guard, a power forward and a center. While the prospect of a backcourt with Anderson and the Hornets' 1990 top pick, Kendall Gill, is enticing, Anderson and Charlotte's vice presi dent Allan Bristow agree that height must be a priority for the team. KAPLAN dL Take Kaplan Or Take Your C hanccs Call About Our BIG 4 Summer Sale! 493-5000 JOT MEM The Skyhawks to the Hornets some teams make people really ill By Robert Brown Staff Writer You've just got to love the end of May. It's a true sports fan's fantasy at once. There are the NBA play off s and the NHL's Stanley Cup. Major League Baseball is getting into full swing. And don't forget about the World League of American Football. With Raleigh-Durham 's impressive showing this season, WLAF mania is bound to sweep North Carolina in the coming years. Probably. Who am I kidding? Like the WLAF will even be here in a couple years. People in London and Frankfurt may love it, but I'm afraid it's a different story back here in the States. People just don't want to see a bunch of NFL wannabes trying to play "exciting, no huddle football," especially not when they could be watching Michael Jor dan or Darryl Strawberry. Come to think of it, I d rather sit and watch a plain, old strawberry than see Roman Gabriel embarrasshimself with a bunch of scrubs bearing the name of my hometown. (Well, it's half of the name, but even that's bad). I figure it ' 11 al I be over soon enough, though. Before long, fans in London and Germany will be watching the NFL on pay-per-view, and the WLAF will be forgotten. ' I just hope the fact that so few North . Carolinians turned out to watch the chances at an NFL expansion team. I think it ought to help the state's chances. It shows that the people around here at least have some foot ball sense. If North Carolina does get an ex pansion team, let's just hope it doesn't screw things up as bad as the Hornets have. Only baseball's Atlanta Braves have a worse history of bungled trades and draft picks. Short-term Leases! Peter Tranere, ROLLING STONE 2:004:30 m 7:009:30 J w?n nn n Af 1 1 iMlU9a4iCJ A RIDLEY SCOTT FILM R As for next month's NBA draft, I think the Hornets haveonly three real options. One, draft Larry Johnson of UNLV and then appeal to NBA Corn missioner David Stern to have last season's Armon Gilliam-for-Mike Gminski trade nullified. Why? Two reasons can be claimed front-office insanity and mental cruelty to the people of Charlotte. Option number two is draft Kenny Anderson. It would bring in the ACC tans, and the team could build around him. Then pray he's as good as he might turn out to be. (Meanwhile, send Muggsy Bogues a one-way ticket to the WLAF.) The only other option is trading. But, remember, these are the Hornets you're dealing with. The chances that they would trade for a young, poten tially dominant player are close to zero. ' ' Speaking of dominant, can you say the Chicago Bulls? This is their year. I can't wait to see Michael Jordan go up against Magic Johnson in the NBA Finals. As usual, Michael will be magi cal, but it will be Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant that will lead Chicago past the Lakers. I pick the Bulls to take the title in six. By the way, not only will the Finals be a dandy, but it will feature four UNC alums and two ex-Clemson stars. The Lakers boast James Worthy, Sam Perkins and Elden Campbell, while the Bulls feature Jordan, Grant and Scott Williams. v Finally, three questions to ponder this week as you tackle those summer school classes: 1 ) How did the Pittsburgh Penguins an AMERICAN team manage to win the Stanley Cup? 2) What exactly was Cliff Rozier thinking? 3) Why in the world are the Atlanta Braves in the hunt for first place in the National League West?
