lOBThe Daily Tar HeelThursday, June 25, 1992 I Pepper's Pizza: 6 A sunny place for shady people' By Ame Coats Staff Writer It's pizza like you've never had it. Gone are the red checked tablecloths and matching uniforms. Instead, Pepper's employees wear their own clothes, their own unique hairstyles and do their own thing. If Pepper's Pizza was a new album, no doubt many would throw it into the ambiguous genre of progressive music. Interestingly, Pepper's, located at 1 27 E. Franklin St., once was School Kids Records. When the owner, David Harvey, moved into a bigger space across the street, he was left with a narrow room. Harvey and a friend, Erwin Shatzen, decided to open a pizza restau rant similar to an old favorite in Atlanta. They named it Pepper's, after Harvey's nickname, Pepper. Both agreed that Erwin's Pizza sounded a bit awkward. Pepper's opened in 1987 with no waits and only 30 seats. Customers or dered near the ovens and picked up their pizzas when their names were called. The concrete walls in the back of the restaurant were covered in graffiti, which customers were happy to pro vide. The graffiti has long since been painted over in a stark white and re placed, in a sense, by a long colorful psychedelic mural with the word "think" appearing obscurely within the design and, less hidden, the word "ZOIKS." "I don't know (what it means)," said Sid Vales, a waitress at Pepper's. "It probably doesn't have any significance." In 1989,Pepper'stookoverthe space next door and expanded to 85 seats. And they certainly have had no trouble filling them. Most customers seem to be the type that keep coming back. One loyal customer said he comes about once a week. "It's the only place I can get spinach on my pizza," said Tom Parks, a UNC graduate and a re porter for The Chapel Hill Newspaper. Spinach, zucchini, pineapple and ar tichoke hearts are only a few of the unusual toppings, along with the more typical ones. One of few restaurants around selling pizza by the slice, Pepper's charges $1.25 per slice and $.35 per each additional topping. Strombolis, calzones and sauceless pizzas round out the casual Italian menu, along with all the basic domestics and an assortment of imported beers. Shatzen said he was especially con cerned with food quality and perfec tion. He places a strong emphasis on See PEPPERS, page 1 IB mm i ( ! J 7 c::jjnt ,- "l.UrJ -v fluffy f If kJ ' i f I .
