Two men from the University

he asked.
“We aren’t fishing," came the ;

“Well if yon ain’t fishin’ what

boat “Hey, if you fellers are
looking for rocks, J got plenty
of ’em in my backyard at home.”
f'haneei are that the fisher
man is still trying to solve the
’mystery of the men who were
looking for ro<ks Actually, there
(is not much of a mystery to it.
The two men in the boat were
Duncan Heron of Durham, and
Bill Reves of St. Petersburg, Fla.
They form one of five teams
engaged in mapping the “Slate
Belt” of Carolina. The
‘survey is a Governor's project
fostered by the Division of Min
eral Resources of the State D«
jpartment of Conservation arid)
Development.
The five teams four of them:
from I NC have covered every
ireh of highway, road arid river)
and much of the backcouritry of
approximately 25 counties.
Mr. R. •vex explained that the
principal object of the survey i.-
to bring the geological maps of
| the Slate Belt up to date '] he
‘only geological map of the area
|was done before 1500 and par
tialiy revised iri 1537.
I The so-called Slate Belt ex
) tends from the North Carolina
j Virginia line through the heait
of the stati to the North * an.
Itna South Carolina line. It. is)
approximately 68 miles in width
In addition to mapping thej
slate, the geologists are also:
noting other rock types such as)
) granite, tuff, gneiss and schist j
| The map, which will take about aj
I year to complete after the sur j
| vey, will serve as a basis for tin
later economic exploitation of
I slates: and other rock types.
The UNC geology profess.oisi
| taking part in the survey arc I
Virgil Mann, W. A White, and
Roy L. Ingram. Graduate stu- -
deni: frum UNC include Stephen
Duncan Heron Jr. of Durham,
Sleton S. Alexander of States )
ville, Kverett Brett of Raleigh,
arid Oscar Bradley kickoff of I
f harlotte.
Mr. Heron ia a professor at )
Duke University who is doing
graduate work here. Also taking!
part in the survey arc Mr. Revc.- I
a recent graduate of UNC, John !
Barker 111 of N. C. State < ollege j
and During Dahl, a graduate
student from N. C. State.
Mr Reves and Mr. Heron arc
the only ones who have done
work by boat, fcs well as by
, automobile and foot. They ex
plored the Cape Fear and the
Neuse rivers in the vicinity of
the “fall line.”
The others did all their work
by automobile and foot. They
examined rock outcrops on every
road, including those roads not
listed on maps, and hiked into
areas not accessible by road.
The survey, which has taken
more than three months to com
plete, will be finished around the
middle of September.
In addition to serving as a
guide for prospectors, the new
map will be of value to contrac
tors. By using it, they will be
able to predict the kind of rocks
they will find in excavation
I
work The map will he colored
to represent the different kinds
of rock.
Thi geologists have worked it:
team of two They have ‘pent
most of thi summer “roughing
it.”
Ihe survey is under the direc
tion of Jasper L. Stuckey of the
•Division of Mineral Resources.
He arid hi- staff have also par
ticipated ir. the project, which is
a part of Governor Hodges’ drive
to find ways, to increase the per
capita wealth of North Carolina
