THE CHAPEL HILL WEEKLY
Sweet ’n Sour Meatballs a la Macklin
By (JINNY LAWLER
Sweet ’n sour meatballs, a long-time favorite
of Mrs. Harry Macklin, 112 Noble St., makes an
intriguing party hors d’oeuvre. Frequently, on
her night off from the family restaurant, Harry’s
on FrafTlclin Street, she makes them in prepara
tion for some festivity schedule:! for the future
or to have on hand for unexpected company.
Company is the expected thing these days, the
last month before the Macklin -' daughter be
comes Mrs. Barrie Bergman in Beih-El Synagogue
in- Durham. Actually, most of the partying is
being done away from the Macklin home as Arlene
is feted at a round of pre-nuptial showers. Re
cently she was given a kitchen shower by her
friends from high school days with hostesses the
Misses Kay and Beth Marley. 203 Short St. Kay
will be a soloist and her sister a bridesmaid in
the ceremony.
Maid of honor will be Arlene's younger sister,
Rosalee, 14. She will be a sophomore at Chapel
Hill High School in the Fall where she is in
terested in dramatics. Arlene, 18, graduated from
CHHS in June and was treasurer of the senior
class. She is enrolled at UXC for the fall semester.
A former student at Duke University, her
fiancee will manage the new Record Bar on Hen
derson Street following their marriage, lie is
the son of the Harry Bergmans of Durham. Al
though the young couple will move into a new
apartment here following their marriage on Au
gust 11, they plan a short trip to Greenwich,
Conn., the first week. Mr. Bergman will be an
usher at the wedding of his best man there on
August 17.
Flying in from Los Angeles on August 9 will
be the Macklins’ son, Ralph. He is in a training
program to become a drug store manager and will
come back to usher in his sister’s wedding.
Ralph, 24, was only eight months old when his
parents opened a drug store here in 1940. Long
time Chapel Hillians will remember it at the site
of the present Youth Center, next to the Carolina
Theater. From there in 1954, the Macklins opened
their first restaurant where the Fireside is now
and on Feb. 24, 1960, moved to the present loca
tion next to the Post Office.
It is at Harry’s, favorite hangout of campus
folksingers and Playmakers’ Theater set. that
“Mrs. Mack” and her husband spend most hours
in their days. Members of the Exchange Club
Pool, they have yet to enjoy it once. Harry’s op
ens early and closes late when the Uimymdty is
in regular session, so the Macklins/nave little
time for other activities. However, sumqier school
students will have to do without tlteir Ham
burgers and Harry’s Delights for a time after Au
gust 24. At that time, the Macklins will close
up shop until Campus Orientation Week. For
their vacation they will spend a quiet time in
Chapel Hill. Last year they toured the New York

The Macklins are natives of Baltimore, Md.,
where they met on a blind date. Mr. Macklin was
born in London, England, but came to Baltimore
at an early age. They both still have relatives |.
there.
Here they are known for hanging various art
works on their restaurant waifs. Fifteen can
vasses are up now, and there are gaps from
which others have been sold, without sales com
missions. Artists contributing include Betty Bell,
who has shown work in the North Carolina Mu
seum of Art in Raleigh; Robert Poe, former schol
arship winner from the Brooklyn Museum of
Art; and Dick Mandell, who uses the cubist tech
nique.
A culinary' work of art, gracing any buffet in
a steaming chafing dish, is Mrs. Macklin’s recipe
for miniature, Sweet ’n Sour Meatballs.
