Polish Freedom Fighter Dies Here Rosary services will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. for Wil helm Gierasimowicz of Chapel HiU, one o t America's freedom fighters, who died yesterday in Memorial Hospital after an ex tended illness. The resary services will be held at the Chapel of St. Thomas More. Requiem mass will be said at the Chapel of St. Thom as More Friday morning at 9. Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Gierasimwicz was born in Wasiliszki, Poland, in 1911, finished collegiate military training at Poland’s Military Technical Academy in 1935, and upon graduation was appointed an engineering officer in the Polish Air Force. When Poland was subjugated by Germany and' the USSR in 1939. he fled to the British Isles in order to share in his country’s struggle against conquest. His flight took him through Rumania, Sy ria, Northwest Africa, across the Mediterranean to Gibraltar, thence through France to Eng land. He arrived in England in 1940, the year the Polish Air Force was organized in the Al lied cause, volunteered for duty, and was appointed an engine ering officer in the 307th Squad ron. During his six years of military duty with the allies he served Successively as engine ering officer with the 604th Squadron, ss supernumary to the station engineering officer, as crash inspector and AID, and as liaison officer with the U.S. Air Force Service Command. For the many services he rend ered to the cause of freedom, he was recommended for the U.S. Bronze Star and the Brit ish Campaign Star. In 1950, he and his wife came to the United States and established their home in Chapel Hill. Both became naturalized citizens in 1956. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and served as Cub Master for Chap el Hill's Scout Pack 830. Since. 1953. he has been employed oy Western Electric at Burlington, as an engineer. Survivors include his wife, Helena, and his daughter, Chris tina, both of the home, and two sisters. Ann Baranczyk and Wanda Limon, who reside in Poland. Pallbearers will be A. F. Jenzano, Harvey Johnson, Jan Karez, \Jeno Palotai, James Pierce, and Paul Trageser. RESCUE Chapel Hill Fire Chief James Stewart reports that 25 of the 38 people who started rescue technique training last ? week finished the four-ni?ht course.
