urday night at the 1963 Debutante
Cotillion and Christmas Ball at
the Central Civic Center in Dur
ham. The new debs are Misses
Nancy Glover Barrett, Charlotte
Winbome Shaffer, Elizabeth Har
ris, Rosalie Ross, and Rebecca
Tatum.

debutantes by Dr. James Cleland,
the debutantes joined in singing
"Silent Night” with Miss Mere
dith Lynn Carr, descant soloist.
The debutantes will be enter
tained throughout the holiday
season with parties and lunch
eons. A highlight will be a tea
dance on Thursday night at the
Candida Inn. Parents of Chapel
Hill debutantes will be hosts and
hostesses.

Kirkpatrick Wins First From Hearst
Curry Kirkpatrick, sports editor
of The Daily Tar Heel and a jun
ior at the University, has been
awarded first place for the month
of November in_ the William Ran
dolph Hearst Foundation $40,900
Scholarship and Grants Program.
Mr, Kirkpatrick was awarded
a $750 scholarship for his story
on the effect of the death of
President John F. Kennedy on
