“We Are Americans First and Trade Unionists Second” _ _ WILLIAM GREEN, PRES. A. F. OF L NO DRAFT, EXCEPT FOR U.S. Way down in Raleigh, N. C., is a newspaper publisher with vision and a sense of fairness unique in the profes sion. He is Josephus Daniels, once a member of Woodrow Wilson’s cabinet. This is what he says about the proposal to draft labor: ’There is a distinction between drafting men to work in Uncle Sam’s shipyards and in drafting them to work in Sam Smith’s shipyard, even if Smith is building ships for the Navy. ‘The contractors are running their business for profit, and for the government to draft one man to work for another is entering into a field that savors of privilege and involun tary servitude. “If, in the course of the war, it becomes necessary to draft workers, then Uncle Sam should expropriate the plant. “It must be Uncle Sam’s—owned and managed by him_ with not a dollar of profit to any individual or corporation.” —Seattle Washington Teamster. 10% EACH WEEK FOR WAR BONDS ****»*+++ ..n -J1JLIU Vegetables for the Family Help Make V-Home •The 1913 Victory Home conserves food by producing its own supply of vegetables. Jersey Typos Lead Move For ITU-AFL Unity —V— NEWARK.—Newark Typographi cal Union No. 103 has set in motion legal procedure to initiate a member ship referendum on reaffiliation of International Typographical Union with the American Federation of Labor. The resolution, which must be in dorsed by 150 local unions, declares that “the question of adjusting differ erences between the ITU and AFL re garding observance of autonomous rights of the ITU have never been clearly presented for consideration by the membership, having been con fused with partisan consideration which should have no place in de ciding this issue.” More than 120 locals have already endorsed the demand for a vote on the issue. -V SPREAD YOUR VACATION IS NOW URGED —V— WASHINGTON.—Jaseph B. East man, Director of the Office of Defense Transportation, has asked that all em ployee vacations begin and end on Tuesdays, Wednesday, or Thursdays, and that they be scheduled through out the year. The ODT Director said the trans portation situation made it impera tive to start vacation schedules now and extend them throughout the year in such a way as to avoid travel at holiday periods. He asserted that railroads and bus lines could not handle vacation travel this year if it were concentrated in July and Au gust. “We are strongly urging persons who can take vacations this year,” he said, “to spend them at home or as near home as possible. We are urg ing them, if they go away from home, to limit thei rtravel on public carriers to a single round-trip to the place where the vacation is spent. And we are urging them to do any vacation traveling only on days other than Fri days, Saturdays, or Sundays, so as to avoid the week-end travel peaks.” -V PATRONIZE JOURNAL ADVERTISERS Help Conserve Precious Tires!
