Guy Gill ette, chairman of the Senate sub committee policing this year’s senatorial elections, will investi gate the races in Florida where •Sen.. Claude Pepper was defeated and in North Carolina where Sen. Frank P. Graham was beaten on June 24. Sen. Gillette said he will send investigators also into Pennsyl-I vanian, Illinois and South Caro-j lina where other Fair Deal sup-; porters and ^incumbents are run- j ning for1 re-election against big-j spending reactionaries. Twice previously the U. S. Senate has refused to seat men elected to that body for excessive campaign expenditures. . _ « Phenomenal qums were spent to defeat Pepper and Graham and are being poured into Penn sylvania, Illinois, South Carolina against Sens. Francis J. Myers, Scott Lucas and Olin D. John ston. and in California and other atates to beat liberal nominees. Big money, the racial issue, and a decline in liberal votes caused Sen. Graham’s upset in North Carolina. The senator led a 3-man field by more than 50,000 votes in the first primary and failed of nomi nation then only by lacking 5,600 votes of a clear majority. He was forced into a run-off with Willis Smith, former president GREETINGS I _ Artistic Letter Shop 215 West Third St. Tel. 3-0808 CHARLOTTE, N. C. • ■ . I - * . Abate Mr. DaMaeky la the erlelaal AFL ehartoe created te the ILGWU of the American Bar Association, whose supporters stooped to a sraear-Graham campaign hideous to behold. Mr. Smith won by more than 20.000 votes. Labor-liberal votes for Senator Graham stayed home, an analy sis showed. The senator received 303,000 votes in the first primary and held a 50.000 plurality. In the runoff, his total dropped to 251, 000 while Mr. Smith picked up 25.000 votes. About 75,000 Gra ham voters failed to go to the polls. Which proves again that regis ter and vote is the only way to win an election. More work must be done in that direction' at once in every state if a lib eral Congress is to be elected. Labor’s goal this year was to hold all the anti-Taft-Hart ley seats and pick up five mQre' to assure a repeal bill passing the Senate. So fa* labor has failed to hold its own gnd the net loss is two friends of the people. GREETINGS Baptist Book Storo 304 N. Try on St. Tal. 5-1461 CHARLOTTE, N. C. GREETINGS Burke Novelty Co.
