The great question with the farm era, is how to diversify their crops in such manner as to make the most out of it. The culture of the sugar beet has not been discussed in this section much ; but Tue Democrat think9 the subject worth the consideration of our farmers. We give the foN lowing; frono a lute number of the Baltimore Manufacturer's Record and hope our readers will note it well: "Whether or not sugar-beet factories will pay in the South will soon be demonstrated by the one now almost comnleted at Staunton, Va. In other part9 of tbe country they have been saceese fal, and the owners of this one ex pect equally good results, and that toev may have ;s our hearty wiah Thf beet-sugar industry has been Oeveioped but little in this conntrc not more than five or six factories having been erected, while in Europe there are many times this number and each year shows an increase. There are few crops which can irake ao good a showing.7' ENFORCE THE LAW. Wilson Advance, i . ... n is wins regret, that we notice the increased number of shoot ng crapes in all direction?. You can.iot pick up a paper without having a homicide stare ynu la the face. Now if the people left their pistols at home, as the law says they should the could not possibly use them when a few heated words happened to be spoken on the streets or else where. We thought tbe day for carrying a pistol in ODe's hippocket had passed away but it seems that notwithstanding tbe fact that our laws make it an offence, punishable by fine or imprisonment, yet every other young man you meet at night has one of these in struments of death concealed about his person. While peopie are mak irg so much fuss about, new laws, please let us have, at least, a few of those now i.n the statute booka er forced. C, Jan. 10th. About four miles from here ner Haggles turn out, on Thursday morning last, about 7 o'clock, the through freight bound South with 35 cars was wrecked, throwing 27 cars from the track, completely de molishing 18 or 20 cars. It was Caused, as some say, by a misplac ed switch, and otherwise the breaking of a centre pin. One man by jump ing from the car was badly injured, having a leg broken and serious internal trouble. The engineer was badly jarred but fortunately not seriously hurt. The colored man who was so badly hurt was brought here en the wrecking train and at tended by Dr. Furgerson but died the same day about 4 o'clock. The wreck was cleared up so t hat trains could pass next day about one or iwo o'clock. Christmas Tree at Dawson's (Correspondence to The Democrat ) I left home Monday, Deo. 26, to attend the Xmaa tree at Dawson's X Roads. I'm sure I never had a colder drive, arrived at the pleasant home of brother John Lawrence, found all in fine spirits. Brother and s'ater Lawrence seemed aomewbal younger than before. After I had warmed myself we all marched to the church and on arrival found a Xmaa tree, neatly arranged and heavily loaded with presents. At 7, p. m., the Superintendent brother O. C. Stalhngs called the bouse to or der. Very soon all was still and we had a pretty song from the choir, fol lowed by a prayer. The Superin tendent then addressed the audience and 1 am sure 1 never heard one more suitable for such an occasion. His heart is and has been fully in the Sunday School work. Then the wri ter was called on and as he did not have mucQ to say the cry wae heard, "Santa Claus is coming," and ia he came giving all plessant words as he passed up the aisle. On hearing his voice, we found it was brother Jae. Branch , and he made a splendid Santa Claus. After a little fun with him the Superintendent called for his committee to make a dis tribution of the many presents. The tree was soon unloaded, all the children having received something nice and useful. Many of the grown people were surprised with presents. Tbe pastor's heart was made glad with a box ot nice things and besides a splendid buggy robe, which made the drive more pleasant bick home. J.R. AT THE NATION'S CAPITAL WHAT THE LAW MAKERS ARE DOING Correspondence to The Democrat.) Washington, I). C, Jai. 0, 1S93. Senator Chandler is developing a tendency ro throw oratorical Vrlcks h round wit'i all the cdireienes.s which characterized tbt, hensatlon al Congiesional career of Benja min F. Iiutler. Wbile ppeak ng In favor oi the National Quarantine bill Mr. Chandler made a few re marks about the lelations existing between Secretary Foster and other Treasury officials and the North German Lloyd Steamship Co., tbe agents of which have been in Wash ington eince tbe session began for the purpose of preventing legisla tion for the suspension of immigra-. tion. He also Lad something spicy to say aboat the courtesies extend ed by the fame Steamship Co., to the proinineut newspaper men who compose the Giidiron Club. Here are the exact words of his ar raignment of Secretary Foster and Assistant Secretary Spaulding, and many consider it strong enough to call lor an investigation. If it isn't true Chandler should apologize; if it is true Foster should be impeach ed. "Thin North German Lloyd Steamship Co.," said Senator Chan dler In bis speech, lis the favorite route for the Secretary of tbe Treas ury and the Aassistant Secretary of the Treasury and the Commissioner of Immigration and other Treasury officials when they go abroad, and the Company is very kind to them. It always gives theni the best of ac commodations, aud if thoy find themselves lacking money when they are on the other side and Con-giee-s has been negligent in provid ing the means for their transit and their support over there, it loans them money." It is very evident Horn Mr. Chandler's plain and un mistakable language that he be haves the republican officials whose duty it is to enforce the present im migration law have been bribed ny this Steamship Co., to neglect their sworn duties, and that he thinks some prominent Washington cor respondents are. in the same boat. The speech has caused a great sen sation in Washington, and that class of newspaper correspondents -entirely too numerous who make a practice of placing themselves un der obligations for favors received frocu any who choose to offer tbem tire highly indignant; but ail the i;ime it is a fact that no correspon dent is apt to wnte disagreeable things, even though ha knows theui to be true, about those he is under obligations to. That speech hits a good many of them in a tender spot, and it hurts. Some papers will not allow their correspondents here to accept costly courtesies, and the sooner they all get on that ba sis the better for till 'joncemed. After much persuasion, Mr, liar lisoii issued an order extending the ossified Civil Service to the letter earner.? at all free delivery offices, bul declined to Include Bureau and division chieis in the Government Departments, or piinteis in the Government Printing Office. It is expected that th;s order will keep :etween G,000 and S,000 republi cans in office under the democratic administration, but il Mr.Cleveland is prompt in displacing republican post masters the example of the republicans in dealing with tbe railway mail eieiks at ti-.e begin ning of the Harrison administration can be followed and a few thousand democrats be put in before the Civil Her vice Comm.ssieu holds examination and prep-ires its list or ellgibles. The World's Fair people are af er another appropriation lrom Con mess. Thss time the amount wanted exceeds $025,000 $485,400 for judges, $20,000 for stenogra phers, $27,990 for deficiencies in the payment ot salaries and the expenses of the National Commis Rion, and $93,190 lor expenses ot the board of lady managers, ihe general impression in Congress is that the amounts are too la;ge and they will be cut bri'ore they can get through.
