Sometimes an old, run-out pasture can be greatly improved by harrowing thoroughly two or three times in early spring; then sow a mixture of seeds. The following might be used, aUhough it is not customary to sow as much per acre under thesfe conditions aS when a well-preparetl permanent pas ture is laid out: Red clover, six pounds; alsike clover, four pounds; Kentucky blue grass, 32 pounds; orchard grass, 3 pounds; meadow fescue, 3 pounds; red top, 3y3 pounds; timothy, five pounds. You might simply bow on blue grass, timothy and alsike clover in moderate quantities. After the seeds are sown, roll. It would in crease the chances of success if some fertilizer containing a rather high per centage of nitrogen was applied. Some times one can find damaged cottonseed meal, which makes a splendid fertil izer for pastures, as do also wood ashes, though the latter are seldom sold on a guaranteed anaylsis, and may contain much or a very little potash. We would not purchase them unless they wer guaranteed. However, we ad vise dividing the pasture and contin uing -the use of the greater part cf it while thoroughly preparing and seed ing a few acres each year, flow the ground this spring; sow peas and oats. Plow them under about the middle of September, tit the ground well, sow the seeds indicated above, roll and pas tuie light the first year. It may be said, too, that if the effort is made to improve the pasture without re plowing, it will not succeed unless the field is pastured light the coming sum mer. If it is trampled over , and gnawed by too many cattle, many of the young plants will perish. It is pre supposed that a dairy herd is connect ed with this pasture. If so, one of the things to do is to sell ten of 20 per cent, of the poorer cows. There are few dairy herds from which the net profits would not be increased by even giving away this 20 per cent, of 'in ferior and usually unprofitable ani mals. Country Gentleman. DURABLE BARN ROOF. One Made to Carry a Track for a Hay Fork Should Be Steen, and Well Unlit. Almost any kind of roof structure may be made to carry a track for a hayfork. Hayforks and hay-carriers are operated most satisfactorily where the roofs are steep, third pitch or more, and the mows deep. The curb construction of roof, shown in the il 1 lustration, carries the track high up, ! and in this dav of economies it is best to make the roof high and leave the extreme upper portion of the mow un filled. The steeper the roof the less thrust there will be on the plates and ROOF TRACK FOR HAY CARRIER. the easier will the load be carried. Rafters two by six-inch will be strong enough to carry an ordinary barn roof and the load of hay, since the track is attached to every pair of rafters, and the rafters are but 16 inches apart. This distributes the load, if the barn is small and the roof steep, two by four-inch rafters will be strong enough. The steeper the pitch the smaller the rafters may be, other things being equal. Country Gentle man, v THE GROWING OF RAPE. Farmers Are 'Sotv Paying? More At tentlon to This Really Valuable Crop Than Ever Before. At the meeting of the Wisconsin Agricultural Experimental associa tion recently held in Madison a num ber of reports were given regarding experiments in rape growing the past season. As indicating the nature of these reports we give the following: Va riety Essex. The soil in which it was sown was a heavy clay; plowed in the spring and sowed broadcast immediately after oats were sown, about five pounds to the acre. The field was then harrowed and crushed, leaving the ground in fine tilth. The little plants began to make their appearance June 20 and from that time on made good prog ress, but did not seem to interfere with the oats. The weather during the greater part of the growing sea son was exceedingly dry and the en tire crop suffered. The oats were cut the last week in July. In cut ting them the machine was tilted so as to leave the stubble and rape plants about six inches in height. In a short time after the oats were re moved the rape came on very rapidly and in about three weeks it was fit for feeding purposes. The ground being at that time pretty well cov ered with forage we turned our cows onto it for about two hours each morning. The rest of the day they had the run of a good grass pasture. The milk from these ten cows was sent to the creamery. We could not detect any taint in the milk or did the man at the station. Later in the season on another piece of ground I sowed some rape 12 days after sowing the oats and harrowed it, but this piece did not get a good start and did not thrive like that first sown, but I think it was due to the fact that the season was exceedingly dry during the time It should have been growing.
