Friday November 1 1918 TOOT YOUR HORN In 1907 two Detroit autoonobilo companies filed articles of associa tion and designed medium-priced models. AY lien they were put on sale there was very little differ ence in the details of construction and their appearance was about the same. They had really been designed by the same engineer. He was or iginally employed by one of the concerns, but went to work for the other after completing most of the layouts, and on joining the second company he found positions for some of the technical staff who had worked for him on his forme.' job. Result': two cars at about the same price, equally good-looking and equally well constructed. One of -the companies is going strong yet and the other failed in a year and a half. The second company's car never caught on with the public. The president of the first concern was an advertising expert of na tional reputation, who had got into the automobile game because he saw ?-oney in it. He hardlv knew a jackshaft from a fishing-pole, and had made his name by pushing the sale of labor-saving office ap pliances. But the nature of the product didn't matter. He un derstood publicity. We are all salesman in a sense. . An office boy applying for a job is marketing his services, and the one who makes the best impression gets the job. It isn't enough to have a good commodity for sale; you must let your customer know it, and it is nothing to his detri ment if you describe your product convincingly. He is not forced to buy; but it is to his disadvantage if he never learns all the merits, of what vou have to sell. DIRECT TAXATION MISUNDERSTOOD America as a Avhole had had lit tie knowledge of direct taxation so that it is no wonder that there are manv dissentients to tne in come and other direct taxes that from now on will be assessed ever- y year. We have paid the taxes from the very beginning of time, but they have been so slight, or have been camouflaged under some other title, such as rent, im Yt) duties or high cost 'of lux uries that we have led ourselves to believe we pay nothing ourselves aid the other fellow pays it all. Now that the demands upon the government are immense these and additional taxes cannot longer be same position that citizens of ever- y other country occupies when his country is spending more than its income. Wars are the most pensive things in the world, but they have been going on from time immemorial and the people have always had to pay the piper. This war being the greatest in history has also been the most cost lv, and. for America, has started her on her national debt for the fy-J, timesince the republic was formed. Bonds are taking care of part of the war cost, but this is a na tional debt. Income tax, excess profit tax, and' luxury taxes have njj been placed, but with it ail , there will be a tremendous defi- j cit which time alone can wipe out! if it is ever wiped out. I Those of us who are fussing ov pr rwv in prima tn' nlmrffAH Iijivp given little thought to how light they are as compared with our al lies. We pay thirty dollars in come tax on $2,500 income, where as the Englishman has to pay $210 on the same income, it you earn ) five thousand dollars here vou are I called upon to pay $180, but if you were in England you would have to pay $750. Ten thousand dol lars income pay here $845. but in England $2,250. One $20,00, $2,895 against Englands assess lrlrfl oi $6,812. On $50,000 we- pay here $12,495 and in England $20,937 and on $100,000 the char ge in America is $39,095 against $47,187 in England. it is Hvell to nc)te now much greater is the income tax on small and moderate incomes in Great Britain than in America.
