Wednesday, March 1,2000 Bertie Ledger-Advance Page 11 The rain fell in torrents ... and the water from the Cashie River just kept rising ■ :Ui ‘ ” Vva''V'.4 ' . , ':j'if 1^.- •• — • ’ -Vi ^1. It was typical of so many roads in the county and area that were closed for several days, and then some were unsafe — particularly those involving bridges — until they were checked and/or repaired by North Carolina Department of Transportation. On the north side of town on U.S. 13 the Stocks’ family home was also threatened, but damage there was miqor^ compared to the loss of stock and equipment at the station. (Photo by Gina Rose) : Jack Curlings seems to be checking out the depth of the rising water, but the van on U.S. 13 in the background indicates that travelers were already plowing through high water. The Curlings were evacuated later by boat, and the two daughters were able to salvage only a few precious pictures and things. (Photo by Margaret Curlings) " -i. js, f.
