FEBRUARY 1,2017 News The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Bertie-Hertford Foundation awards funds RALEIGH — The North Carolina Community Foundation is allocating grants from its Disaster Relief Fund to support recovery efforts related to Hurricane Matthew and flooding in affected areas of the state, ac cording to Rodney E. Martin, chair of NCCF’s grants committee and statewide board mem ber. The Bertie-Hertford Community Founda tion, a local affiliate of NCCF, has distributed $10,920 to date. The board directed the grants to: $5,460 to NC Baptist Men for Hurricane Mat thew disaster relief in Bertie County $5,460 to NC Confer ence - United Method ist Church for Hurri cane Matthew disaster relief efforts by the NC Methodist Men for Ber tie County NCCF’s Disaster Relief Fund was established to support mid- to long term, unmet needs and does not compete with ‘boots on the ground’ organizations estab lished to raise funds for more immediate relief. NCCF’s other local af filiate foundations serv ing affected counties are also in the process of determining the non profit agencies that can best provide assistance in their areas. NCCF has received gifts from across the state, country and even the world, accord ing to NCCF CEO Jen nifer Tolle Whiteside. No portion of the funds will be used for the Foundation’s adminis trative or operational expenses, an approach NCCF is also encourag ing among local grant recipient agencies. “We have been struck by the quick and car ing generosity we’ve witnessed during the weeks since we activat ed the NCCF Disaster Relief Fund,” Tolle Whi teside said. She said that NCCF especially wanted to acknowl edge the generosity of the Tides Foundation, on recommendation of the Google Foundation; AT&T; F.N.B. Corpora tion; the Humana Foun dation and the Oak Foundation. About the Bertie- Hertford Community Foundation The BHCF was estab lished to help donors create and build en dowments to meet their philanthropic goals, make grants to local nonprofit organizations and support commu nity needs in Bertie and Hertford counties. Golden Leaf scholarships awards available RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK - Golden LEAF Schol arship awards, valued at $12,000 ($3,000 per year for up to four years) will be offered to first-time recipients attending a qualifying North Carolina campus for the 2017-18 academ ic year. The scholarships are funded by a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation and are administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. The application deadline for consider ation for a Golden LEAF Scholarship is March 1, 2017. Offered through SUMMER CAMP the Center for Creative Leadership in Greens boro, this program provides leadership building seminars, a summer internship and a stipend. Students completing all four years of the leadership program can receive up to $8,830 in stipends in addition to the Gold en LEAF Scholarship award.
