Belinda White’s face is a familiar one for those who have stepped into the Ber tie County Register of Deeds Of fice. White was born in Baltimore, Md. She moved to Bertie Coun ty when she was two. “We moved back to Bertie County when 1 was two be cause my parents separated and my mother originally was from here,” said White. White attended Bertie County schools and graduated in 1968. THE town of Windsor hosted an event at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the Windsor Town Hall to show support for the hard work gone into repairs and cleaning downtown Windsor following Hurricane Matthew. Many downtown business owners and employees as well as citizens and public officials attended the event. Windsor Mayor James Hog- gard welcomed those in atten dance. See SUPPDRT, A3 In this edition Local business owner charged BY LESLIE BEACHBDARD Bertie Ledger-Advance Halifcix County - The Halifcix County Sheriff’s Office arrested Harold Lee Massey of Massey Funeral Home Tues day, and Massey faces 50 charges of indecent liberties with a minor child and 31 charges of statutory sex offense. Sheriff Wes Tripp said the charges stemmed from incidents occur- ing throughout a six- year period, from 2006 to 2012. He said the case in volved a single victim, who ranged in age from 7 to 13 during that time- frame. Detectives Cory Grif fin and Robert Hale led the investigation, which Harold Massey has been ongoing for more than a month. “We received the al leged complaint and started investigating the complaint,” the See MASSEY, A3 Bertie Co. Arts Council Reopens BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR -Join the re opening celebration re ception. The Bertie County Arts Council will cel ebrate its post-flood reopening celebration from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12 at The Gallery, 124 S. King St., Windsor. The Bertie Arts Coun cil was affected by the flooding of Hurricane Matthew, which caused damage to the floors and walls. This flooding necessitates the art on display being removed by the artists who had placed it there. According to Bertie County Arts Council Board Member Jeannie Carter, the damages to the building have been repaired and artists are bringing their artwork back to The Gallery for display. “This reopening cel ebration will kick off a new year of events and shows for the Bertie County Arts Council,” added Carter. The reopening cel ebration is a time for anyone who enjoys art to come together to socialize and view vari ous styles and types of local artwork. “We want everyone to know they are welcome to the arts council events. It is not just for members. It is for anyone who appre ciates art,” said Carter The Arts Council will resume regular operat ing hours on Monday, Feb. 13.
