BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE March 1,20171 A3 The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Continued Perry ties included vehicles, guns, ammunition, certi fication and grants, among others. Sheriff Holley began discussing the possibility of Perry becoming Chief Deputy in September of last year, and made the move official Tuesday. “1 appreciate Greg (Atkins) continuing to work part-time during his retirement to help us. That has allowed me to take my time to make sure this decision was done correctly,” Sheriff Holley said. The sheriff said Perry will move into more of an administrative role as he becomes Chief Deputy. His duties will include budget, grants, and other leadership responsibilities. “1 served as Chief Deputy for 11 years, and 1 know how important this position is for our county,” Sheriff Holley said. “1 want Kenny to be well-prepared. 1 want him to know as much as 1 do about the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.” Perry said he respected the position, and un derstood the importance of it. “1 think its almost impossible to be a sheriff without serving as chief deputy,” he said. “1 think it is why Sheriff Holley was so prepared. There’s no way to know what we do, or how we do it without having experienced it.” Perry said he was particularly honored to serve in his native Bertie County. “It has been an honor and privilege to serve in the same county 1 grew up in and still live in,” he said. “1 knew what 1 wanted to do a long time ago. I’m home and protecting and serving the* people 1 grew up with and that matters to me. “1 am looking forward to the challenge of the administrative side,” he added. “1 want to help keep the office strong, and even help make it stronger. 1 want to keep the respect of the guys in the office and the respect of the communi ty” Sheriff Holley said he was proud of Perry, and of his entire staff. Both men said they were proud of the sheriff’s office and some of its re cent accomplishments. The list of accomplishments included: being named last year as the sixth safest county in North Carolina by Niche.com; starting a drug task force along with Hertford and Northampton counties and the Ahoskie Po lice Department; earning a grant, written by Perry, to put com puters in 10 Bertie County Sheriff’s Office ve hicles; continuing the process of making the Bertie County Courthouse safer; working towards a pre-trial release program; and establishing a place to leave old prescription drugs at the sheriff’s office. In addition, both Sheriff Holley and his new Chief Deputy were pleased with the establish ment of a satellite office in Roxobel at the for mer Southern Bank building. “With no police department in Roxobel or Kelford, it helps tremendously to have an of fice there,” Perry said. “Our officers can do re ports there, and it can be used a command post should the need arise.” Sheriff Holley said the office is also being used by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the drug task force as needed. The two said they are working with officials in the town of Aulander to establish a similar satellite office there. “Neither Aulander nor Lewiston Woodville have been able to find the right person to serve as police chief,” Sheriff Holley said. “We are working with them to help in those towns as much as possible while they continue their search.” Perry began his duties Tuesday. Sheriff Holley said a decision as to who will assume the role of Lieutenant hasn’t been made at this time. Perry and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Colerain with their son. Matt.
