MARCH 8,2017 BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE News The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Lawrence re-establishes FFA charter BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance MERRY HILL - Lawrence Academy begins the process of re-establish ing Future Farmers of America (FFA) charter. ^ On Thursday, March 2, upper school stu dents from Lawrence Academy had an op portunity to hear from three of North Caro lina’s National FFA offi cers when they visited the school. Lawrence Academy is in the process of re establishing an FFA charter that is set to begin with the 2017- 2018 school year. Mary Kate Morgan, Layne Baker and Sarah Thomas, all current freshmen at North Car olina State University, spoke with the students about a school-based FFA program. Students learned sev eral interesting facts, including the dramatic statistic that the glob al populations reach 9.6 billion by the year 2050. The speaker stressed the need for jobs in the field of agriculture in order to meet the de mands of this growing population. Today’s FFA helps members prepare for careers in agribusiness, agrimarketing, science, communications, edu cation, horticulture, production, natural re sources, forestry and many other diverse fields. Students were able to text questions about FFA/Agriculture to the speakers, and then hear answers through a question and answer session. Students were also given an opportunity to speak individually to the state officers of the program. “It was intriguing and inspiring. I hope I can be a part of FFA in the future,’’ said Lawrence Academy Junior Dan ielle Belch. “The program was im pressive, and provided answers to many ques tions. 1 want to join FFA because it can help me in my agricultural ca reer, and farmers need all the help they can get. I am glad we are starting a FFA program at Lawrence Academy and I will help in every way I can,” added Law rence Academy eighth grader Peyton Foster.
