B2 I APRIL 5,2017 Sports BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Errors, walks hurt Bertie girls Following two wins, Lady Falcons emerge 7-3 after loss to Bears BEAR GRASS - Errors and walks did in the Bertie High School softball team Monday night. The Falcons issued five walks and made five errors, and Bear Grass Charter took advantage with clutch hits and several stolen bases, on its way to an 114 non conference victory. Bertie (7-3 overall) had baserunners on in every inning but fell vic tim to a six-run fourth frame which saw the Bears (74 overall) come up with four hits. The Falcons tied it at 1-all in the top of the second inning when Stephanie Castelloe reached on an error, ad vanced on an error with one out and scored on a passed ball. The visitors took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Megan Williams walked and advanced on Castelloe’s double." They both crossed the plate - Williams on a wild pitch, and Castel loe on a double from Cydney Johnson. Bear Grass regained the lead, 4-3, with three runs in the bottom of the third inning on a hit, a walk and an error. Bertie tried to make a rally in the top of the seventh inning when Williams reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a double by Jessie Mizelle, but Bears’ pitcher Kea gan Wilkerson coaxed a grounder to the mound for the final out. Williams and Johnson each collected a pair of hits for the Falcons, while Alyssa Byrum, Castelloe, Mizelle, Bri Forehand and Kaleigh ♦Freeman added a hit each. Bertie led 2-1 in the second inning and then tacked on two more in the third frame, six in the fourth and one in the fifth to complete the 10-run victory. The Nighthawks helped the visitors cause with six errors. Byrum was solid on the mound for Bertie. She allowed just two hits, struck out five and walked no one. On March 27, Bertie stepped out of confer ence and defeated Gates County 13-2. The Falcons scored four runs in the fourth inning, added two in the fifth, four more in the sixth and three in the seventh. Lindsey Dickens, Cas telloe and Mizelle led the offense with two hits each. Collecting one hit each were Williams, Johnson, Forehand and Freeman. Byrum was the win ning pitcher. She al lowed six hits, struck out six and walked two. Softball From B1 the regular-season se ries. Claire Dail, who came in for Mariah James in right field in the seventh inning, made a running catch with the potential tying run on third base to keep Parrott off the board and secured the Warriors’ non-confer ence win. Dail and Lindsay Smith (double) had clutch hits in the bottom of the sixth, and Lauren Baker and Megan Davenport walked, as Lawrence scratched out a run to take the lead. The Warriors started strong with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on hits from Bak er, Gracen Rogers and Goodwin. Parrott scored runs in the fourth and sixth frames and put a runner on third with a one-out triple in the seventh. Baker got out of the jam with a strikeout and the game-ending fly ball to Dail. Wednesday’s Result Lawrence 7, Northeast 6 LASKER - Clutch hitting in the sixth and seventh innings helped Law rence rally from a 5-1 deficit to edge North east, sweeping the sea son series. Northeast scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and took a 5-1 lead into the fifth as it looked to avenge a JIM GREEN / Bertie Ledger-Advance Lawrence Academy second baseman Bella Conigllaro se cures a pop fly. 9-0 loss to the Warriors in the first meeting. Lawrence rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the defi cit to one run. In the inning, Bella Conigliaro walked, Lau ren Baker was hit by a pitch, and with two outs, Rebekah Goodwin and Brinson Edmond son came through with base hits. The Warriors added three more runs in the top of the seventh in ning on two-out singles from Gracen Rogers and Lindsay Smith after Megan Davenport and Goodwin had walked. Smith went 3-for4 for Lawrence, while Ed mondson was 2-for4 with a double. Adding one hit each were Lauren Baker, Davenport, Rogers and Goodwin. Conigliaro walked twice and scored once. Baker was the winning pitcher with 13 strike outs and eight walks over seven innings. March 20 Result Lawrence 7, Ridgecroft 3 AHOSKIE - Four play ers collected two hits each, and Lauren Baker scattered eight hits and struck out 11 on the mound, as Lawrence held off Ridgecroft in a Tarheel Independent Conference game. The Warriors scored single runs in the first, second and seventh in nings and added four in the top of the fifth frame. Ridgecroft rallied with a pair of runs in the bot tom of the fifth and add ed a run in the sixth, but wasn’t able to complete the comeback. The four-run fifth for Lawrence started with one out. Baker singled, Megan Davenport walked, Gracen Rogers singled, Rebekah Good win singled, Brinson Ed mondson drove in one with a groundnut and Lindsay Smith singled to make it 7-2. Rogers and Goodwin each went 2-for4 with two runs scored, while Lauren Smith and Lind say Smith were both 2-for4. Bella Conigliaro was l-for-3 and Baker and Edmondson both went l-for4 for the Warriors. Davenport walked twice and scored twice.
