Schools begin cuts, changes BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Bertie Coun ty Schools Superin tendent Dr. Steven Hill went before the Bertie County Commissioners on Monday, April 3. At the regular sched uled meeting, Hill ex plained the school board’s plans to correct the problems associ ated with its current red lined financial situ ation. According to a March 27 letter from Public Schools of North Caro lina, the 2016 serious financiai problems af fecting Bertie County Schools were: * A general fund bal ance deficit of $704,995; * A special restricted fund balance deficit of $135,078; * A negative net posi tion of $45,992; and * Expenditures in excess of revenues by $1,332,614. Other issues included overpayments and/or unrealized income total ing more than $ 1,000,000 including: * $339,000 in outstand ing checks to Bertie Lo cal Education Agency not deposited; * $250,000 in pay ments to Blue Cr6ss Blue Shield (BCBS) ex ceeding related with holdings and employer match amounts; * Approximately $200,000 in unrealized collection of indirect costs for federally fund ed programs; * $180,000 reversions of unexpended stated allotments; * $60,000 in unutilized state position allot ments; * $55,067 in net over payments to employees related to outstanding salary exceptions; and * $833.36 in overpay ments for contracted services in excess of agreement. Special Olympics held BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - “Individually unique together complete.” Bertie County’s Special Olympics were held last Wednesday, April 7 at Roy L. Bond Stadium. Participants from schools and groups came from across the county including Bertie Middle School, Bertie High School, Colerain Elementary School, West Bertie Elemen tary School, Windsor Elemen tary School and Solid Founda tions. Bertie High School Princi pal Calvin Moore welcomed the participants, volunteers and coaches to the event. Preparations have started. North Carolina’s old est Relay For Life enters her 24th year next month, and those helping orga nize the event are seek ing help making it one of the best ever. This year’s event is set from 6 p.m. until midnight on Friday, May 19 at Roy L. Bond Jr. Stadium, across from Bertie High School. New and returning Relay teams are being sought to sign up now as the event date draws closer. Those wishing to do so can register online (www.relayfor- See RELAY, A3 BCSO awaits report BY THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSDR - Investiga tion continues in a March 28 blaze that killed two people. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said officers are awaiting a patholo gy report, and continue to follow up on informa tion in the case. The victims - 60-year- old LuAnn Perry Am brose and 58-year-old Kenneth Ray Ambrose - were found deceased in the fire that destroyed their home. The original call came in to the Bertie County 911 Center at approxi mately 1:30 a.m. the morning of the fire. Deputies were called to the scene when the two bodies were found inside.
