A6 I NOVEMBER 8,2017 BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE Life & Style . The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION Harvest, giving thanks CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Hoke Roberson Sr., a businessman in Bertie County for over 50 years, turned 100 years young Oct. 14. He celebrated his centurion milestone with family, and Is pictured with J.W. “Russ” Russell and his favorite car, a teal Chevrolet. Jacobs promoted MILLINGTON, TENN. - Navy Chief Informa tion Systems Techni cian Shannon Jacobs, from Windsor, was recently promoted to chief petty officer. Chief Jacobs is serv ing aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. “Being selected for chief petty officer means the Navy sees and appreciates all the hard work and ac complishments of my sailors and me,” said Jacobs. Achieving the title of ‘Navy Chief is a major honor and milestone. According to Navy Personnel Command, there are only 8.5 per cent of sailors current ly serving at the chief petty officer rank. “1 would have to say my mentors, leader ship and my sailors are the key in my se lection,” said Jacobs. “They have trusted me to complete the required work, my education, and rec ognition regardless of awards or a simple thank you.” During the ceremo ny, the honored sail ors invite friends and family members to pin on the two gold an chors that adorn the new appointed chiefs’ uniforms. “I would have to thank my family,” said Jacobs. “They helped me and encouraged me in every aspect. My husband is the tru ly the greatest.” Moving into this sea son of harvest and giving thanks seems a good time to take stock of the fruits of our la bor, those who have made them possible and all we have to be thankful for. Roanoke Buzz Carol Shields there are a few that we really should mention. Among those who for many years have believed in and gener ously supported this regional development are: Anne Lunsford, Deane and Bailey Phelps, Heber Coltrain, and both Lucia Peel and Lucia Peel Powe. Each of these advocates has been instrumental in getting our organiza tion through the tough times our region has faced over the last de cade. Special heartfelt thanks to Lucia Peel who has served as RRP chair for the past 12 years. We are so very grateful for all she has given! As we move forward, we are grateful for the new leaders recently named to guide our organization. We wel come Mayor Charlotte Griffin as our new chair. Other newly elected RRP board members include; Dock Boone, Brent Lubbock, Doward Jones, Justin Edwards, Mayor Jerry McCrary, Shelia Powell, Sarah Harris, and Jean Richter. We are excited about learning from and working with each of these npw members to grow our impact! Moving forward, we are excited about the growing support for renovating the old Col ored School in Ham ilton to serve as an important cultural ad dition to our Roanoke River Paddle Trail. We are collaborating to re purpose this historical ly significant building to be: a river/commu nity center; an interpre tive site for the region’s Rosenwald School his tory; and a place to learn more about the Roanoke River’s role in the Underground Rail road. The opportunity for this historic school to connect visitors to our natural assets and to be a crossroads for experi encing both the Rosen wald and Underground Railroad history of our region is very inspiring. We are very grateful to have the opportunity to “champion” this re gional, North Carolina and American history! As we develop sup port for this project, we invite those with artifacts, old books and papers or other items connected to this his tory to contact us. We welcome such dona tions along with your thoughts and ideas relative to this history and this development. Of all the things we have to be grateful for, it is the people found throughout our region that we treasure the most. You are the rea son we do what we do to bring favor to our re gion and we are grateful for ALL your support! Carol Jones Shields is the Executive Director of Roanoke River Partners, Inc.
