N :g':' JIM GREEN / Bertie Ledger-Advance Bertie running back Lacurtis Askew (No. 1) emerges from the smoke as Nate Cheeseboro tries to block during the Falcons’ annual football game against Hertford County Friday night. BEARS-FALGONS: THE RIVALRY Bertie gets off to fast start, Hertford Co. rallies for win BY THAOD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The fog hadn’t settled when Bertie scored first at Roy L. Bond Jr. Stadium Friday - quite literally. The Falcons used an interception from Dar- , ius Rascoe - his eighth turnover in 2017 - to set up a quick score while the fog from the Falcon’s entrance was still cas cading across the field and into the stands. In the end, however, it was the Bears who made their way out of the stadium with their 12th consecutive vic tory over the Falcons, rallying for a 40-38 vic tory. The game started with Rascoe’s intercep tion, which he returned 27 yards to give the Fal cons possession on the HCHS 25-yard line. Falcon sophomore quarterback Isaiah Williams picked up 12 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Senior running back Lacurtis Askew picked up seven and four yards on back-to-back car ries before crossing the plane with at 2-yard plunge. Williams con nected with senior Nate Cheeseboro on the con version pass, and Bertie led 8-0 with 10:23 to play in the first quarter. The Bears responded on their next drive, go ing 58 yards on six plays aided by a Bertie per sonal foul. The score came when quarterback Lance Hunter passed to Qyshaun Chism. The point after was blocked by Cheeseboro, preserv ing an 8-6 advantage for the Falcons with 8:08 still to play in the first period. The Falcons picked up a 28-yard gain on first down on their next possession, but the drive stalled and the home team was forced to punt. Second-year football boss Grantley Mizelle reached into his bag of tricks and faked a punt. The two-point See RIVALRY, B2 McVay, L.A. Rams are silencing the doubters HSSSBIBI •$?'* li ^ ,j[p David Friedman We have all had peo ple who doubted us. We may have even picked up a hater or two. Think about how much sweeter success has been when you re flect back on those who questioned your abili ties, especially those who seemed to eagerly anticipate your failure so they could be the first to stand up and point out their success in predicting it. If L.A. Rams Head Coach Sean McVay is it all like me and finds enjoyment in watch ing others dine on five courses of crow, then he must be a very hap py man. The Rams were a team entering the 2017 sea son with a lot of excite ment and not a lot to be excited about. They had a brand new head coach in McVay. They had a second year quarterback who strug gled mightily, and a third year star running back who had taken a large step back the year before behind a strug gling offensive line. Not only did L.A. have the worst offense in the NFL last season, their defense was getting torched as well. They ended the year with seven consecutive loss es by a combined 136 points. The Rams had a young and struggling offense, a porous defense and a decade of consecutive losing seasons. How do you fix this? They decided to fire a well respected and ten ured head coach in Jeff Fisher and replace him with the youngest coach in NFL history, a 30 year old with zero head coaching experience on any level. I’m not em barrassed to say I had my own doubts as to whether Sean McVay’s tenure in L.A. would be a successful one.
