Windsor Police Chief eye of one of his officers led to yet another arrest of someone trying to smuggle contraband into the prison. Windsor Police Cpl. Frank Ratzlaff was patrol- at approximately 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10 when he spotted a person near the back cor ner of BCl. Once spotting the per son, Cpl. Ratzlaff parked his patrol vehicle and went to the location of the person, and had him lay on the ground and place his hands behind his back. “As Cpl. Bertie County officials received an early Christ mas blessing last week. The Golden Leaf Foundation’s Board of Directors approved ad ditional disaster recov ery funds. The county will re ceive $240,000 for the Teacher Housing Initia tive and $2,750,000 for the library and coop erative extension joint use facility. It was a packed house at last week’s Powells ville Commissioners’ Meeting for the swear ing-in of the town’s newly elected Mayor and two new and one returning commission er. Mayor James Peele was sworn in first at the meeting. Peele, a retired former Bertie County Coopera tive Extension Agricul tural Agent, began his political career eight years ago when he was elected a commissioner for the town. He stepped into the role serving as the town’s interim mayor after the previous may or, Thomas Asbell, was asked to resign in sum mer 2016. After Heritage Colle giate appealed the State Board’s November deci sion, a three-member re view panel met Tuesday to hear presentations from the school and the Department of Public In struction (DPI). With re marks considered from both sides, the panel supported the board’s call for a charter revo cation. Olivia Oxendine, one of the three board mem bers who served on the review panel, told EdNC on Thursday there were issues with Heritage Col legiate not conducive to operating a school. “The school was just not positioned to move forward to do well,” Ox endine said.
