The funds will assist with the purchase of a new laboratory chemis try analyzer. The cutting edge ana lyzer will replace the current model that is becoming outdated and sometimes contributes to delays in patient lab results due to equip ment downtime. The new analyzer will provide much needed upgrades for the hos pital lab to offer test ing not available on the present platform. The enhancements will also reduce reagent costs and overall oper ating expenses for the VBH laboratory. “We cannot thank the Cannon Foundation enough for the generous grant. The equipment that will be purchased with the funds will save our patients and the hospital time and money, while enabling us to provide conve nient, exceptional care. The mission of Vidant Health is to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina. This grant will help Vi dant Bertie Hospital did just that,” said Harvill. The new analyzer will perform general, as well as specialty, chemistry testing. It will allow the labo ratory to increase its testing menu in order to offer some assessments in-house that are cur rently being sent to a reference laboratory. There will be much faster test result turn around time. Providers will be able to respond to patient needs more quickly. Lewiston Woodville FD receives Monsanto grant LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance LEWISTON WOODVILLE - A local fire department has received a grant. Since 2010, the America’s Farmers Grow Communities Program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, is a program that partners with local farm ers to provide grants to local nonprofits. With this program, local farmers are given the oppor tunity to enroll in the pro gram for a chance to direct a $2,500 donation to a nonprofit of their choice. Recently, the Lewiston- Woodville Volunteer Fire De partment was on the receiv ing end of one of the grants. Thanks to the recommenda tion of local farmers, Johnny and Claudia Griffin of Lewis ton Woodville, the fire depart ment received a $2,5Q0 grant. “The Griffins have always shown faithfulness and un wavering support of the fire department, as well as the families within the fire dis trict. One Stop starts Voters can cast ballots today THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - One-Stop Voting begins today (Wednesday). Those wishing to vote ahead of the Nov. 6 elec tion can do so by going to the Bertie County Board of Elections Of fice. Voting is available from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. weekdays beginning today and continuing through Nov. 2. There will be one Saturday of One-Stop Voting on : Nov. 3, when registered voters can cast ballots from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. There are no local races for sheriff, clerk F of court or commission- ^ er, but there are races for a pair of seats on the Bertie County Board of Education. In District 4, three peo ple are vying for a seat. They include incum bent Norman M. Cherry Sr., former school board member Alton H. Parker and longtime communi ty activist and Hive Di rector Vivian Saunders. In addition, incum bent District 3 board member Emma H. John son will be opposed by longtime educator Christine Dudley. District 2 will see for mer school board mem ber Rickey Freeman run unopposed. Incumbent Jo Davis Johnson chose not to seek a second term. All three democrats who won primaries in May will be unopposed in their race for com missioner. They include Greg Atkins in District 2, Tammy Lee in District 3 and Ernestine (Byrd) Bazemore in District 5.
