The recently gradu ated class contained 16 students totaled $743,925 in scholar ships to 10 different col leges or universities. “We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2019,” said Lawrence Academy School Coun selor Velvet Powell. “They were a driven, determined group of young men and women and it shows in what they have already ac complished. They are Warriors.” The 16 members of the Class of 2019 are heading to college this fall at The University of North Carolina at Cha pel Hill, N.C. One left with serious injuries after coiiision N.C. ranks third in deadly teen crashes LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - America’s roads are a dangerous place for teenage driv ers with 6,376 motor ists between the ages of 16 and 19 years old dying as a result of traf fic accidents from 2013 to 2017. Some areas of the country have proved to be much more deadly than others, including North Carolina, which ranked the third dead liest state for teenage drivers. Kentucky was ranked number one, and Mis sissippi was ranked second. North Carolina had 267 teenage driver fa talities from 2013-2017 with 226,647 licensed drivers 19 years old and younger. The aver age annual fatality per 1,000 licensed drivers 19 years old and young er was 2.36 percent. See TEENS, 7 LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance KELFORD - One per son suffered serious injuries after a one- vehicle accident ear lier this week. Linda Owens was operating a 2006 Ford Expedition traveling north down Harrell Siding Road. According to the North Carolina High way Patrol, Owens failed to stop at the stop sign at the inter section of Harrell Sid ing Road, and 72 Sid ing Rd. Owens hit the ditch and collided with two trees. She was pinned inside the SUV. The Kelford Volun teer Fire Department, along with mutual aid from the Auiander Fire Department extri cated Owens from the vehicle. EastCare airlifted Owens from the scene to Vidant Medical Center with serious EastCare landed at the scene of a one-car accident Monday near Kelford. injuries including bro ken bones. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor and Owens was wearing a seatbelt. The accident is still under investigation by the N.C. Highway Pa trol, and charges are pending. Retired BLA Copy Editor Lanny Hiday, 75, succumbs Tar Heel remembered as a community advocate, volrmteer WINDSOR - The voice of one of Windsor’s strongest advo cates is silent. Lanny Lee Hiday retired to the Windsor community and made it his home - volunteer ing and working in a variety of ways to improve life for citi zens of the town. He died Sun day morning at age 75. “While Lanny was not a Windsor native, he came in and embraced our commu nity,” said Cathy Wilson, who serves as Windsor Mayor Pro- Tern and is Senior Warden of Hiday’s beloved St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church. “He was quick to volunteer and pas sionate -about helping others. Our community, as well as our congregation at Thomas, will greatly miss Lanny.” Mr. Hiday quickly embraced his retirement home of Wind sor, and became involved in numerous volunteer activi ties, including working at The Opportunity Shoppe, where he led the nonprofit organiza tion to be able to give away more than $10,000 in grants over the course of his time there.
