THURSDAY, OCT. 6, ZZl THE FRANKLIN PRESS nd THE HIGHLANDS MACONIAN ; PAGE TF ZE '.2? d of Pure. Bred Catil Started With One Heifer J. J. Tucker and his son, J, S. Tucker, of Barnes Creek, Mont gomery county, have made an ex cellent demonstration of how the owners of small farms may build up1 a herd of pure bred cattle by the purchase of one heifer. ; Back in September 1922, ten years ago, Mr. Tucker and his son invested $95. won by hard work in a pure bred Guernsey heifer pur chased at Mooresville in Iredell county. 1 When the heifer freshen ed with her first calf, Mr. Tucker Disposed oi . tne -oia scruD cow which had provided the family milk supply 1 for some years and deter mined to keep only pure breds thereafter. Starting with the. one pure bred and her calf, they have bred 25 animals, all being descen dants of the original heifer. They have sold ten pure, bred bulls to other farmers in the county and nearly "all cjf these animals are in service, lnaddition, the luckers sold five females to farmers in oth er communities to vaid them in starting pure bred herds of their own. Thus, says A. C. Mimrey, dairy extension specialist at State Col lege;, has the influence of this one farm become felt, over the county ana . more pure bred cattle are grown there now as a result. Mr. Kimrey says the Tuckers get a young three-year-old bull frqm C. L. Necl of Salisbury, use the animal on their herd until he is full grown and then turn him' back to Mr. Neel. In this way inbreeding is prevented and' good blood is kept in the herd at little expense. The Tuckers have sold $1,703 in; cash from the herd and still have ten cows, including the original one," "These ten animals have a cash value nearly equal to the cash receipts.
