EDITOR’S NOTE—The following article is reprinted from the September, 1935, issue of The South-East Aliner, published at Asheville by , Isaac \'an Horn. By NORMAN S. POOLE Vermiculite—a recently discover ed useful Non-Metallic mineral which research is proving to have more potential uses than any other known mineral. Vermiculite received its name from Thomas H. Webb in 1824 who coined the name from the Latin word \'ermiculari meaning to breed worms on account of t'he mineral having a worm like action when in contact with heat, although known t.y exist, it was not until 1(X) years later that commercial uses were found in the United States. Asia is known to have large de posits, India has exported to Ger many about tw^o hundred thousand tons annually for use mostly in the Steel industry, exoeptio.nally fine quality ores have been discovered in Siberia but the cost of transpor tation is too high for economical use, in the United States the chief deposits are found in the Southern Appalachian mountains, the Rainy river district of Montana and in the Turret district of Colorado. The ores are found principally in the pegmaties where metainor))hism ing many uses. No great amount of use has been found for the crude ore except in greases and building up viscosities in oils, but when properly subject ed to from UXX) to 2200 degrees Fahr. heat the crude' ore will ex foliate or expand many times its original size, becoming as light as (1 pounds to the cubic f(X)t, the crude ore being of a hydrous na ture when in contact with heat, steam forms in the ore which ])uffs up, leaving a multitude of minute cavities which provide excellent insulation properties. Th'e fact that calcined vermiculite is fire, water, acid, sound, echo and vermin proof, is odorless, taste less, lion-poisonous, does ,not stain, corode, tarnish, deteriorate, or be come soggy, it is a non-conductor of electricity and lightning, is dia- leetric, capulary, resilient and has a low co-efficient in friction, the North Carolina vermiculite has a B.T.U. conductivity equal to cork and a fusing point exceeding 26(K) degrees I'ahr., for these reasons many uses are jiossible such as any known insulation requirement, for aceoustic plaster, wall board. me pegiiid,Lnj> , has taken place, usually associated j shingles and roofing, switch boards, with talc, asbestos and dunites. The | high temperature glass, any prastic mineral is a hydrated silicate of the i uses such as boiler lagging and micacious family, being an altera- j ])i]>e covering, fibers, annealing tioii product of the mica, biotite, steel, and facings, lining ladels, re- and phlogopite formations. The fractory brick, insulation cement color varies from white, green, to yellow and brown, w-hich when calcined changes from dark bronze to bright gold. The chemical content of the crude ore from the Burnsville dis trict of North Carolina is made up of silica, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, chromium with low iron oxide, less than half per cent cal cium and o,ne and one-half per cent alkalies, with no phosphates or sulphates, which analysis constitutes an ideal industrial vermiculite, hav- extender for rubber, wall paper, printing, paints, 'etc. V'ermicailite can be made plastic with any kind of binder, it has also less than lialf the radiation losses of aluminum. With these advantages and pos sibilities, the vermiculite industry should bring many benefits to North Carolina, as there are many locations where vermiculite has been discovtred, especially in Clay, Macon, Jackson, Buncombe, Madi son and Yancey counties.
