County-wide tax rates in
North Carolina ranged from a
low of 40 cents on the $100 val
uation in New Hanover county
to $2.50 in Pamlico in 1945, ac
cording to a study of county
tax rates made by the North
Carolina Citizens association and
its magazine, "We The People".
Comparing the tax rates of
last year with the previous tax
levying period, the report shows
that 18 counties in the state
lowered their rates, while coun
ty commissioners found it nec
essary to raise tax rates in 16
counties.
