Stewart Gets Job To Move School Hill Howard Stewart, Franklin contractor, was low bidder for removing the old gymnasium hill at Franklin High School. Bids far the project were opened by the Macon County Board of Education in special session Saturday morning. The proposed construction of lunchrooms at Otto and Cowee was mentioned only conversa tionally. "We haven't given up yet," J. C. Sorrells, board chairman, declared. No funds are available for their construction. One of five submitted to the board, Mr. Stewart's bid was 16 cents per cubic yard or $2,001.92 for the entire job of cutting down the old gymnasium hill. The project entails moving about 12,500 yards of dirt in addition to the rubble left when the gymnasium burned last March. With no gymnasium what to do about basketball practice ? next on the high school's sports agenda ? also came up at the meeting and, temporarily at least, cagers will practice In the chilly out-of-doors. An all-weather asphalt bask etbau court was authorized by the board, it will be on the athletic field In front of the bleachers, and will be used for practice until the new gym nasium is ready for use. The court will cost an estimated' $700. Franklin's scheduled home basketball games this season will be played on courts at nearby schools, most of them probably at Highlands. In reporting on his surplus school furniture buying trip to Raleigh last week, School Supt. Holland McSwain told the board he has an order in for addi tional furniture also. On his trip he bought hospital beds for all of the schools and 33 teacher desks. The desks, he said, will be distributed where they are needed most. .Many teachers are using chairs with boards across them for desks, the superintendent added. Other contractors bidding on the removal of the hill included Macon Construction Company, Macon Mica Company, and Thomas J. Seay, all local out fits, and Ferguson and Deitz, of Sylva.
