Newt About HIGHLANDS PEOPLE Fred Bauer, ol Brevard, and Mr. and Mrs. BUI Bauer, of Day ton. Ohio, visited Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Routs Monday. Mrs. J. H. Smith, of Highlands, spent the week-end with the Rev. and Mi-s. Robert Early in Sprue* Pine. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Pax ton left Monday for Jacksonville, Fla , to visit with friends and relatives. They plan to spend about a month there. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wright and children, of Blalrsville, Oa., were the week-end guests of Mrs. Helen Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. Newton Hardie, of Walhalla, S. C.. spent the week end at their summer home on the Walhalla road, near Highlands. The Rev. T. C. Houts and fam ily and Paul Price attended the Youth Fellowship meeting of the Methodist Church in Brevard last Sunday night. This was the reg ular meeting with the youth fel lowship there. Carlton and Henry Cleveland attended the Georgia Tech-Duke game last Saturday In Durham. Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Prager left Monday (Nov. 1) from their home on MiiTor Lake for their home In Altha, Fla. Mrs. Martha Edmondson and C. V. Rainwater left Saturday to spend a few days In Atlanta be fore going on to their winter home in Pensacola, Fla. The Rev. and Mrs. Hugh Mc Mullen and Billy and Marie, and Miss Florence Little were the week-end guests of the Rev. T. C. Houts. Saturday, Mr. Houts and family and their guests attended the football game and home com ing exercise at Western Carolina College, Cullowhee. Mrs. Hazel Sloan, of Horse Cove, left last Saturday to spend a few days in Anderson, S. C., with friends. Cpl. Richard "Dick" Cook, with the U.S. Air Force stationed in Highlands since June, has return ed to his home base in Greenville, S. C., where he is awaiting to be discharged. Miss Beverly Cook, who is a student at St. Genevieve of the Pines in Asheville, spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mr*. Frank Cook, of Highlands. Mr. and Mn Lyndon Kimberly and daughter, of Atlanta, were the week-end guests of Miss Vir ginia Kernan. Mrs. R. V. Waters, of Havana, Cuba, has returned to Havana by way of Miami, Fla., after spend ing several days with the Frank Cooks, of Highlands. Miss Mary Joe Newton, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Newton, of Highlands, visited her parents for the week-end. She is a student at Women's College in Greens boro. Blinds Installed Venetian blinds, purchased with the proceeds of the sale of the school lots near Highlands school, have been installed. Meets Tonight According to Mrs. John Miller, president of the Highlands P. T. A., the Halloween carnival Friday night was a big success. She said they cleared well over $400, over and above all expenses. The P. T. A. will hold its monthly meeting tonight (Thurs day) night. All members are urg ed to be present as they plan to begin a membership drive Thurs day. CROWE IS DISCHARGED Joe Crowe was discharged from the United States Navy October 29. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Crowe, of Highlands. McCalls Hurt In Car Wreck | A Highlands couple was injur i ed about 3:45 p.m. last Thursday when their early model automo bile went out of control on US 64 east of Highlands and nosed down a small embankment. Highway Patrolman A. A. Lewis listed the couple as Mr. and Mrs. William Jerry McCall. Both were taken to the Highlands Commun ity Hospital for treatment. Mr. McCall later was transferred to Angel Hospital in Franklin. He received a broken nose and a bro ken jaw. Mrs. McCall was cut and bruised, the patrolman said. The patrolman said Mr. McCall. who was driving, probably lost control of the automobile after being struck in the back of the head by some article. He said the McCalls were moving and the back of the car was loaded with household goods. The car was traveling toward Highlands and ran off the raod near the Briar Patch Gift Shop, about three miles from Highlands. The patrolman said the car, a 1937 Chevrolet, was a total loss. C. m DEATH CLAIMS C. t SETSER IN HOSPITAL Former Grid Star i Passes In Twin City; Rites Held Monday Charles Elbin Setser, 37, Macon '( instruction worker and former ( Franklin High football star, died t Saturday about 4:30 am. in a , Winston-Salem hospital. After a short illness here, Mr. j Setser was taken to Baptist Hos- | 3ital in Winston-Salem on Octo )er 25. In local sports circles, Mr. Set ser was considered one of Frank lin's all-time football greats. He , played four years of outstanding . sail and in 1937-38 his senior year, was captain of the team. Funeral services for Mr. Setser were conducted Monday at 11 a. ; m. at the Carson Chapel Metho dist Church by the Rev. S. B. Moss, pastor, and the Rev. M. C. Wyatt, pastor of the Mt. Hope Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Born January 5, 1917, he was the son of William Lawrence and Mrs. Nanie Pearl Gibson Setser, of Franklin, Route 1. He had been in construction work for 17 years and was a member of the Frank lin Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers, W. L. Setser, Jr.. of Detroit, Mich., John A. Setser, of Swannanoa , and Franklin, Roy J. Setser, of Winston-Salem, and Rufus L. Set ser, who is with the U.S. Navy at Key West, Fla.; and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Childers, of Franklin, and Mrs. Fanny Mae Callison, of Winston-Salem. Pallbearers were Earl Cabe, Vir gil Watkins, Alex Dills, Howard Crunkleton, Mack Suttles, and Verco Watkins. Potts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. TROY pons PASSES AT HOME HERE Cabinet Maker Dies Sunday At Age Of 53; Rites Held Tuesday Troy Lee Potts, 53-year-old cabinet maker, died unexpectedly at 11a.m. Sunday at his home in Franklin. Funeral services for the Macon native were conducted Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Franklin Meth odist Church by the Rev. S. B. Moss, pastor. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Born August 28, 1901, Mr. Potts was the son of Judd and Mrs. Isabella Raby Potts, of the Cowee community. In Clayton, Ga., on October 8, 1930, he was married to Miss Ivelle Moore, of Waynes ville, who survives. In addition to his wife and par ents, Mr. Potts Is survived by two sons, Bobby Potts, who Is with the U.S. Army in the Panama Canal Zone, and Conrad Potts, who is with the US. Navy in San Diego, Calif., and a brother, Paul T. Potts of Franklin. Serving as pallbearers were Lawrence Potts, Carey B. Patton, Quince Shope, Charlie Bradley, Jack Angel, and Luther Rickman. Kirkland Girl Is Polio Victim Brenda Joyce Kirkland, nine year-old Cartoogechaye School fourth grader, was taken to the Asheville Orthopedic Hospital Wednesday of last week where her illness was diagnosed as polio, the health department has re ported. The child, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Kirkland. of Franklin. Route 1. is the second reported case of polio in Macon this year. She is undergoing treatment at the Asheville hospital.
