'American Education Week' To Be Observed By Club Members of the Elizabeth Kelly Future Teachers' Club of Franklin High School will observe "Ameri can Education Week" Nov. 10-16 with several activities. The theme for the '67 observ ance is "An Educated People Moves Freedom Forward". This rear marks the 37th annual ob servance of the week. The local club will sponsor the following activities: On Sunday, Nov. 10. the pas tors of Macon County are to use as a sermon topic, "Education for Moral Values". A play entitled, "Teachers ? , Yesterday, Today, and Tommor row", will be presented before the kigh school student body at an as sembly program. Fifteeen mem bers of the club will have roles in the play, which Is intended to both Instruct and amuse. A special bulletin board will be erected in the lobby of the high school, depicting the theme of "American Education Week". A window display at the Twins' Shop will focus attention on the observance. Co-sponsors of the Future Teach ers' Club are Miss Frances Win stead and L. C. Howard, Jr. The club has 26 members. The public is invited to visit the school anytime during the week. MISS DILLS TO MARRY DOWDLE Mr. and Mrs. Alex Dills an nounce the engagement of their daughter. Miss Virginia Dills, to Shirley Dowdle, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Dowdle. The wedding will take place Nov. 27 at 8 o'clock at the Morri son Presbyterian Church. MISS CAROLYN BRADLEY MARRIES ROY BROOKS Mr. and Mrs Lawrence Beck, of Franklin, Route 1, have an nounced the marriage of their niece. Miss Carolyn Bradley to Roy Brooks, formerly of Frank lin. The wedding took place Oct. 12 in Michigan. Both are working in River Rouge, Mich. Soldier On Leave In Foreign Countries A Macon County soldier, Pfc. Oeorge Bryant Cunningham, has just finished spending a 17-day leave in Ireland. Scotland, and England. He has returned to duty in Iceland, where he has been' sta tioned since last February. He is an acting motor seargent with the 2nd Combat Team. Pfc. Cunningham is the son of Mrs. Lesh Hastings, of Dillard. Ga.. Route '1. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lunsford, of Atlanta, Ga., spent the week end visiting Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Davis at Kyle. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Grey, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., recent ly spent a few days with Mrs. Grey's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Hembree, of Kyle. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Haney, of Kyle, spent Friday of last week at Hiawassee, Ga., on business. Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Cope re cently spent a week end with Mr., Cope's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cope, at Kyle. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Myers and daughter, Carolyn, spent last week end in Chapel Hill visiting Mr. and Mrs. Bob Myers. While there they attended the Carolina Tennessee football game. Jesse and Bobby Slagle, of At lanta, Ga., are spending this week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Slagle and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Crawford. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jenkins and Buck Creek Club Clears Cemetery Members of the Back Creek Community Club met last Thurs day morning at the Baptist church to clear the cemetery, a club pro ject. Twenty-five men and women helped with the work. Lunch was spread on tables in the church yard at noon. The club already has completed its mail box project and expects to put up road signs soon. A committee from Buck Creek recently met with the district highway engineer at Webster and received promises of improvements on the Buck Creek Road. This Also is a club project. A new community building and two picnic areas are planned as futQre projects. family visited Mrs. Jenkins' moth er, Mrs. Ann M. Biebinger, in Asheville last week end. While there they attended the show "Holiday on Ice" to celebrate the 10th birthday of their daughter, Barbara Ann. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Smith, of Asheville, visited Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Sanders this week, and ac companied Mr. Sanders on a busi ness trip to Atlanta, Ga., on Tues day. Frank I. Murray. Jr., who is em ployed by the U. S. Treasury De partment with headquarters in New Ojrleans, La., visited his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Murray, Sa., last week end. Boy Injured, Car Wrecked During Race A passenger was injured and a car wrecked In an alleged race between two cars Saturday night on US 23-441 about a mile north of Otto, according to a report made by Highway Patrolman W. O. Leming. Bruce Shuler, of Route 3, a high school student, received a cut on the forehead when the car in which he was a passenger went out of control and struck a bank. The car was being driven by Bill Gordon McCall, of Route 3. and the officer said it went out of control during a race with one operated by Edward Kenneth Dal ton, of Route 4. The McCall car went off the left side of the high way, returned to the center where it forced the Dalton car off on the right shoulder, and then went to the left side again and struck the bank. Skid marks indicated the McCall vehicle was out of control 684 feet before hitting the bank. McCall was unhurt. Both vehicles were traveling to ward Franklin. The drivers are being charged with reckless driving, speeding, and racing. McCall was a school bus driver, but has been relieved of duty be cause of the circumstances sur rounding the mishap.
