Our Schools and The Legislature Two weeks ago, in announcing for rep resentative, I tried to state my position clearly. Questions that have come to me since indicate I m^y not have made myself com pletely clear about the schools. On that sub ject, I said: I believe members of county boards of edu cation should be elected. Under the present plan, they are not, but are nominated in the primary and appointed by the General As sembly. Under that plan, I believe a legis lator is honor bound to appoint those nomi natctf. , So there can be no possible misunder standing, I wish to add this : Under the present law, I will appoint those nominated. The last thing I'd want to do is to "tear up the schools". And there's no occasion for that ; because, in my opinion, Macon County's schools are being well adminis tered. Weimar Jones. This picture of solid ice on the Little Tennessee is for the benefit of Maconians away from home who may have doubted reports that their home county was in the icy grip of winter re cently. Many oldtimers say it was the first time in years that the river froze above the Franklin bridge, the point from which the picture was taken. Walk er, chairman of the state A.S.C committee. Mr. Walker says, "Every year there are some farmers who.' through inaccurate measurement on their own part or because of incorrect information on the acreage in permanent fields, plant either more or less than they are actually permitted by their allot ment. In the case of overplant ing, this causes the farmer un necessary expense in the way of ilnused fertilizer, unused plants jr seed, and treating of land that :annot be used. In the case of j underplanting this could cause ;he farmer to lose some of his i planting history'." This premeasurement service nay be requested through the ocal A.S.C. county office. The of ice will furnish, train, and equip reporters who will do this pre neasulement work. The farmer vill be required to pay only the actual cost of the visit to his (arm i and the determination of acreage on his farm. When he makes ap plication at the AB.C. County Of fice for this premeasurement serv ile. the farmer must deposit suf ficient funds to cover the cost of work. The premeasured acreage will be accepted as the "official" measured acreage for all AB.C. purposes provided the farmer plants the entire premeasured area and no more, and provided there was no obvious error made in the premeasurement. A later trip will be made to the farm to determine that these re quirements have been met, but In most cases, additional measure ments will not be necessary. Walker reminded farmers that the only way they can be sure that they have planted their en tire allotment and no more Is to have the people who will later be responsible for determining com pliance with the program lay out the area they will plant. Only a limited amount of this premeas urement \york can bfe done in the short time available so applica tions should be made early. All farmers desiring premeasurement should visit the county office as soon as the announcement of availability and cost is made in the county, he concludes.
