State Highway To By-Pass Scenic Bridal Veil Falls Bridal Veil Falls, Macon Coun ty's much-photographed waterfall wonder on US 64 between Frank lin and Highlands, may be a scenic "must" fqr travelers, but it's a wintertime pain-in-the-neck to the State Highway Department. But it's a pain that will be cor rected at the end of the tourist season in the fall, according to Nelson Waldroop, county high way supervisor. The beautiful cascade that pours over the highway is going to be by-passed by construction of a small section of road that will enable winter travelers to drive on US 64 without experiencing delays when the falls freezes and ice blocks the highway. Won't Detract Mr. Waldroop said the road under the falls will still be main tained and the state plans to land scape the by-pass so it will not detract from the natural beauty of Bridal Veil Falls. Demonstration Club Meetings For Week Are Announced Meeting of home demonstration clubs in this county (or the coming week have been announced by Mrs. Florence S. Sherrill, county home demonstration agent. They are as follows: Today (Thursday): Holly Springs club at 1:30 pjn. at the community building. Friday: Mulberry club with Mrs. Hattie Norton at 1:30 p.m. Monday: Franklin club at 1 p.m. at the Agricultural Building; Hickory Knoll club at 2 p.m. in the Hickory Knoll Methodist Church basement; Highlands club at 7:30 pjn. in the Methodist church basement, with Mrs. John Burnette and Mrs. Neville Bryson as hostesses. Tuesday: Carson club at 9:30 a.m. at the community center; Ridgecrest club at 1:30 p.m. with Both the regular road under the falls and the by-pass will be open at all times. From the standpoint of main tenance. this past winter was just more than the highway depart ment could take from the falls. Almost Lost It Not only did maintenance crews have to keep a constant watch for ice on the highway, they al most lost a piece of machinery to the cascade. It happened one bitterly cold morning. A road scraper was dis patched to the falls to break up an ice jam that had formed over night. During the operation, the scraper slipped over the edge and before it could be pulled back on the highway BVidal Veil Falls and freezing temperatures encased it in ice (see picture). That did it! The by-passi project will be let to contract in the fall. Mrs. Edward Crawford. Wednesday: Cartoogechaye club at 2 p.m. with Mrs. Rex Andrus. Thursday: Higdonville club at the home of Mrs. Ted Higdon at 2 p. m. Parachute Jump Made By Stewart At Fort Specialist 3/c Charles R. His wife, Claudette, and his mother, Mrs. Clara Stewart, live in Franklin. BY-PASS COMING Macon County's scenic Bridal Veil Falls is going to be by-passed in a highway project this fall. In the above picture, the by -pass will cross at the right, eliminating the curve under the falls. At left is a graphic illustration of why a by-pass is going to be built at the falls. Under all that ice, believe.it or not, is state high way motor gradkcr that stalled last winter while working to break ice loose and was soon put in a deep freeze itself. The by-pass and the road under the falls both will be open, and the new section will be landscaped in order not to detract from the natural beauty of Bridal VeiL Ellijay News Items Mr*.
