FROM HIS RALEIGH DESK ? Senator Forsyth Mails His Weekly Newsletter Matters Of Interest To The 33rd District The Sterilization Bill was given an unfavorable report by the Senate committee on Public Health and seems to be a dead issue for this session. Senator Jolly has promised that some other measure of this kind will be introduced. However, It is thought that the new measure will have the same fate as the old one. Legislative activity this week has been, for the most part, a matter of passing local legislation and waiting until the Minimum Wage Bill comes out of committee to the Senate floor. The Appro priations Committee appointed a subcommittee to make a concen trated study of all money requests and work up a package to present to the Legislature for its action. A bill Was Introduced In the House this week which would eliminate rotation of the senator in the 33rd district. This bill was signed by the representatives of all five counties and would, if passed, throw the entire district open to nominate a senator in the primary selected from the five counties at large. WENT VISITING ? I visited Senator Arthur Williamson, of Columbus County. This county is one of the largest tobacco grow ing counties in North Carolina, although sweet potatoes, peanuts, and truck farming are very much in evidence. I was told that the ground would produce almost any crop in season, and that this is one of the richest agricultural counties In North Carolina. Co lumbus County also has the Regal Paper Corporation, which draws a large supply of its wood for pulping from this county. There is a lot of share-cropping and my observation is that its people are, generally speaking, about like our people in the far west. I visited Wilmington, which is the major seaport In North Caro lina, but lacks the heavy Industry that should follow along the Cape Fear and the Ports Authority at Wilmington. This heavy industry would have a great economic effect on this important North Carolina city. On the way to Southport, we passed approximately 350 Liberty ships in mothballs along the river, j These are some of the ships, built in assembly line production, which helped to win World War II. Southport has a natural har bor, averaging some one and one half miles long and with a depth of about 40 to 45 feet. It had the first shipyard in America. The main industries here are farming and fishing. The U.S. Department of Defense owns 20,000 acres of land in Brunswick County and there is located here the largest ammunition loading station in the United States. Constant pounding of footsteps on carpet is the most serious cause of wear However, In any home carpet has the heaviest traffic and hardest usage in the living room, entrance hall, stairway, and rooms used as passage ways. It is wise to get a good quality soll-reslstant carpet for long satisfactory service. WALL-TO-WALL CARPET ? I Where the rooms flow Into each other, wall-to-wall carpet in the same color oij design throughout increases the apparent size of the rooms and adds elegance. Like- j wise, such carpeting is a dignified j setting for large rooms. i ROOM-SIZE RUGS. For a well furnished effect, the rug should come to within eight inches of the wall in a small room; 12 inches in a large room. Estimate the size needed ? although the dealer will send an expert to take accurate measure ments, especially for wall-to-wall carpet, the homemaker may wish to make a rough estimate before going to the store. Here is the simple rule: measure length and width of floor and multiply the results to obtain the number of square feet in the area; divide by nine to obtain the square yards. the world. We went on into South Caro lina to the beaches ? lots of ac tivity, even this early in the year. Everyone is looking forward to a big season. Just for my personal pleasure I wouldn't give one acre up in the mountains for all the sand and surf, but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Eastern North Carolina and learning something about its people and its problems. The caravan went through Ra leigh today. Since I plan to go home this week-end, I will tell you all about it next week. Regards to everyone.
