I II The Vass-Lakeview School, which opened last week with W. H. Davis as its new principal and with an in itial enrollment of 423, with more to come, is one of the community’s chief assets. The school plant is lo cated in the. edge of town and is set far back from the highway, giv-; ing a maximum amount of safety; to the children. The building is a two-1 story brick structure with a large I auditorium on the ground floor, j There is ample space for all kinds of | outdoor recreational activities. ' Both the elementary and high school departments are standardized. | A full academic course is offered and every effort is made to give practi- i cal training as well as preparation \ for college. More than 100 pupils are | "nrolled in the high school. | A vocational agriculture depart-1 ment under the guidance of VV. E. I Gladstone, has been doing splendid i work for .several years and members ‘ of this department have won numer- j ous honors and prizes in competition with students from other schools. I This group, which so far this year consists of 33 students, is plannnig to hold a two-day vocational exhibit early in November, covering various pha.ses of agricultural work. Already the boys and Mr. Gladstone are plan ning many booths of educational val ue and the boys will e.xhibit many ar ticles of furniture and farm conven iences made in their school workship. A milking contest promi-ses to be an interesting attraction. Preliminary contests will be held on the farms and the outstane^ig milkers will com pete in the finals. The town officials are cooperating by providing a building in which to hold the exhibit and by arranging for suitable entertainment features. The school has a well equipped li brary of approximately^ 1400 volumes which is a source of pride. Last win ter a full time librarian was in charge and during the summer months the library was open certain hours two days a week. Practically the entire .school year The Story of Vass First Nlamed Bynum, Later Winder, Finally Vass For Seaboard Paymaster BV BESSIK C-AlVreBON SMITH When E. D. Byrd built a house in a pine forest midway betw'een Cranes Creek and Little River about the year 1877 and brought his family to it, little did he know that a thriving town would one day look back to that event as its beginning. At that time the surrounding coun try was a vast forest of round pine timbers, unbroken .save for small clearings here and there where the Bynums, the McLauchlins, the Mc- Keithens, the Collins, the Fergusons, the Smiths and others had settled over a wide area, and farmed to sup ply the needs of their families. Soon it was rumored that there was money to be made in the turpen tine business. Newcomers began com ing in and “turpentine shanties” sprang up here and there. The set- a lunch room is operated, where chil dren able to pay can obtain nourish ing lunches at five cents each. Needy children are served free of charge. The Va.ss Woman’s Club has for three years sponsored a WPA garden and canning project for the* school, and already around 900 quarts of fruits and vegetables have been can ned for use in the lunch room this year. Va.ss-Lakeview enters heartily into athletic, music and dramatic activi ties and the boys and girls receive excellent training in club work. Miss Bernice Shields will teach piano this j’ear, beginning next week. Members of the faculty include W. H. Davis, Mrs. W. E. Gladstone, Miss Kthel Whitley. W. H. Howell, W. E. Gladstone, Mi.ss Mary Emma Thomas, Mi.ss Louise Leslie, Mi.ss Eva Kirk- man Mrs. C. P. McMillan Miss Mar garet Kelly, Miss Katharine Graham, Miss Bessie Cameron, Miss Valeria Womack and Mrs. Ruth Lang Gard ner. tlement was named Bynum. I About the same time the Seaboard Air Line Railway Company built its' line through this section. Of the peo ple in the community at that time,' only two remain, Mrs. W. ,1. Cam eron, who was then Sue Bynum, and Mrs. G. W. Griffin, who was Nettie, a baby of the E. D. Byrd household. Mrs. Cameron remembers distinctly! when the first train came through.' Everybody from the whole country-' side assembled to .see it go by, she recalls. With the coming of trains and the establishment of a postoffice, the name of the settlement was changed to Winder in honor of Major Winder,! a railroad official. In 1812 the name| was again changed, this time to Vass, in honor of Major William Worrell Vass, a paymaster for the railroad who came through each month t« pay the employees. Lumbering followed the turpentine industry. Logs were floated down th* river to W’ilmington. Men accom panying the rafts would rettun t» Fayetteville by boat and make th» remainder of the trip home either by train or ankle express. Among the early settlers of Vass and the outlying territory whose de scendants are still active in the life of the community were A. Camiron, W. J. Cameron and Norman Camer on, three brothers who came fjom Harnett county; Dr. J. A. Leslie, SS. S. Edwards, E, D. Byrd. Archie Gri»- ham, J. A. Keith, Alex Smith. Doug^ aid McLauchlin, Joseph Bynum, Darw iel B. McKeithen, Dave Byrd, A. J. Keith, Alexander McRae, Daniel Mc Gill, and perhaps others. A HEARTY WELCOME TO HOTEL CHARMELLA’S New Manager and Guests.
