THE PILOT, Southern Pines, North Carolina Page Four Rotary Clubs in Intercity Meeting Here 125 Members and Ladies Hear General Manager of Ivey Department Store T|ie Southern Pines Rotary Club was host to the Rocltingham, Wadcs- boro and Laurinburg fvotarlans and Rotary-Anns last Friday night at the Highland Pines Inn, with District Governor Ed Willis, George Ivey of Charlotte and othei prominent mem bers present. The program was fea tured by a talk by David Ovens, vice-president and general manager of the Ivey store in Charlotte, co founder with Mr. Ivey of the big de partment store. One hundred and twenty-lfive enjoyed this Inte.r-club meeting. Advertising “all of the thrills of a mojor league game” and with comedy including hip pock et catches, backhand pitching, grand stand banter, the Hoboes come here on their 35,000 mile tour of the country under the sponsorship of the Aberdeen Lions Club. Tickets will be 35 cents for adults and 25 for chil dren, and the proceeds go to the Lion’s charity fund. RAYMOND PASTOR OF CHURCH 266 YEARS OLD MISS MARV JOHNSTON A .special feature of the regular I monthly meeting of the F’lora Mac donald College Woman's Club, held on Tusday evening in the college par lors, was the presentation of a chest of silver to Miss Mary Johnston by the faculty and administrative staff of the college. Miss Johnston, whose resignation becomes effective at the end of this college year, has been the beloved and efficient dean of women at Flora Macdonald for 33 years, and with an intervening year and a half spent abroad, was for seven .years prior to her deanship a member of the con servatory faculty as professor of piano. Fire which is thought to have been started by rata totally destroy ed the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Fry in Vass early Wednesday morn ing. Nothing was saved except a small chest in which valuable papers were kept, and there was no insur ance. Mrs. Fry, who is in her'seventies and quite feeble, awoke between 2:00 and 3:00 o’clock and noticed a light in the closet in the bedroom. She called Mr. Fry and he tossed a bucket of water into the closet, then closed the door and went for another supply of water. When he returned, the flames burst through the door and suddenly spread throughout the l Oom and the aged couple barely had time to escape. Mr. Fry was slightly burned- The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Atkins, known as the Mary Jane Baker place, about three miles east of Vass w'as burned to the ground last Saturday afternoon along with some ouL-buildings, one of which con tained Mr. Atkins’ supply of ferti lizer for this year’s crop.
